Testimonials

What an Awesome Month!!
God showed up big time during the July Kicking Bear camps in Wisconsin and Michigan! In these uncertain, trying times God showed up through so many incredible people to bring joy, fellowship, and healing to so many of the Kicking Bear friends and family members. At our most recent camp events the folks that came got to forget about the world’s troubles and darkness, just go out, and hoot, holler, and go wild at our great venues. We saw God move into many young people’s hearts when they chose to be baptized under a sky lit by fireworks! There were many special encounters at each of the camps, so let’s encourage you with some of them.
During our West Salem camp at Maple Grove Venues we had such a great turn out of participants with over 370 people showing up to fly down a 150-foot waterslide, run the Kicking Bear Tough Course, and shoot all the different and unique archery targets, throw tomahawks, shoot BB guns, and even shoot pop bottles with wrist rockets! There was a great team that was well prepared and created a loving environment that could be both seen and felt. None of this would have taken place without the relentless effort of all these volunteers who made this a safe and fun environment for everyone.
Pastor Matt Schroeder from Horizon Christian Fellowship Church, La Crosse, WI and his team prepared and packed sack lunches for everyone. Austin Siewert, with One Trust Realty, provided backpacks for all the kids; these were filled with several different “treasures” including the Simple Gospel. Pastor Travis Becknell and his worship team from New Hope Fellowship Church in Onalaska, WI played up-lifting Christian music during the lunch break and during the baptisms. It was awesome to witness all the singing and dancing! A huge marshmallow fight broke out after the games and for 40 minutes the “battle” waged on. At the same time, the bonfire was lit, and it was the size of a one-story building. The crowd gathered around as Pastor Billy Hestand from Bethan Ev. Free Church, La Crosse, WI shared the message. Everyone was focused on his words. Afterward, Billy gave the invitation to the crowd that if anyone would like to have Jesus as their personal Savior, they should join him in prayer. There were so many decisions for Christ, and we were handing out Salvation Poem cards and Bibles at the same time as all the hands reached out for them. (Bibles were donated by the Gideons at Living Word Church in La Crosse, WI) Then the question was asked, “Would anyone like to be baptized here tonight?” Then one by one they came up to get interviewed for baptism. All these kids wanted to let the world know that they love and follow Jesus!
At my station, the tomahawk throw, it was so refreshing to see kids be able to compete, whole-heartedly, against each other as they chased the “World Record” for the number of tomahawks stuck in a row. Zack won with 39 in a row!! Another highlight was getting to see whole families compete against each other. “I BEAT MOM!” one little girl said, and I got to see that family grow closer together in that moment. That’s what Kicking Bear camps are all about! There was SO much joy and laughter to be heard, especially from the kids screaming down the waterslide! The folks from Centershot Ministry and Genesis bows showed up to help the Kicking Bear Team instruct proper form on the archery course, and they also shared how Jesus first showed us the proper archery form. The local Fire Department, Police Department, and officers from the DNR all gave presentations on their equipment and there were even awesome animal furs that could be touched. Thank you to all the service men and women!
Rick Pedersen, Division Publisher and Editorial Director for Driftless Outdoors Magazine, said, “I contacted Ray to see what Kicking Bear camps were all about and Ray invited me to the West Salem camp. I remember meeting Ray over 20 years ago at a gym and also met him several times since. He has a larger than life personality and performs his intended mission of faith.” During the next several hours at the camp, my feelings ran from goosebumps to almost tears of joy as I witnessed the interaction of all the kids and their families—I saw lives being changed! It was amazing to see the activities I witnessed and how smoothly the event ran. Ray and his team managed the group of volunteers as efficiently as military generals and with the same precision. As I listened to countless success stories, I knew my calling was not only to be part of all this as a partner, but to use my God-given gift to write, to share, and to spread the Kicking Bear mission. Words can’t describe this opportunity nor my level of excitement!
Aaron Scheer, President of Centershot Ministries, was one of the many great volunteers at the camp. Here’s what he had to say about the camp, “I always love going to a Kicking Bear Camp because I see and meet great people, but I also get to do one of my most favorite things in the world, and that’s teaching kid after kid how to shoot a bow. You get to see their self-confidence grow right before your eyes. They thank you with a grateful heart because you helped them overcome their fear. At the end of the night you see those same kids listening to a message about our wonderful Savior. Then beneath the fireworks, the baptism tank is full—only at a Kicking Bear Camp! “
After all the games and wild events, Aaron was asked to interview each kid that wanted to get baptized. He remembers asking them questions to make sure they understood what this first step of obedience represented, and then it happened! A 12-year-old girl came forward to Aaron with a look of sadness and fear in her eyes. He asked her the same question he asked all the kids, “Why do you want to be baptized”? What she said next broke his heart. “I don’t know if I need to get baptized yet, I think I have evil in me.” As his heart sank he said, “Oh sweetheart, there is One who is greater than all evil”. She asked, “Is that Jesus?” He explained that Jesus has overcome evil and He offers us safety and salvation. At that moment she asked Jesus to forgive her, and she gave her life to Him. The baptisms continued, and they were almost finished when, to Aaron’s surprise, the young girl came walking back up to him holding someone’s hand. With a big smile she said, “This is my brother and he wants to be free like me.” As Aaron thought about that experience, he said, “Freedom—it still overwhelms me.”
At First Free Church in Onalaska, WI Kevin Bonnar is a youth pastor and at the last two West Salem camps he’s been one of the many incredible pastors that has stepped up to volunteer. This year, as he was by the bonfire with the fireworks going off helping Ray baptize 10 young people. he said, “There was an overwhelming feeling of joy that came from those kiddos as they came up and out of that water, and their families were there cheering.” Talk about an unbelievable experience! The smiles and tears that overcame many of the kids and families truly let you know that God was present in an incredible way. “The way that the outdoors, a bow and arrow, and, most importantly, God are so beautifully intertwined in this ministry, well, it is truly what Jesus asked us all to do in Mathew 28:19-20,” Kevin shared. And Kevin wanted to tell everyone, “If Ray or any of the Kicking Bear Team members invites you to come share the Gospel, make a little ruckus and tear it up with friends and family, you’ll do yourself a big favor by saying “yes”!”
Now let’s jump over to the Roscommon, MI Kicking Bear camp where Michael Ritchie had a special encounter with a young man at the camp. “Day one of Kicking Bear-Centershot camp in Roscommon, MI and we were doing a practice round for Saturday’s Centershot tournament. I could see the frustration grow on young John’s face as he was shooting a bow for only the second time in his life. He was not even hitting the target half the time. Introducing myself to the youngster in the coonskin cap I asked him if I could make some suggestions on his shooting form. Looking down he nodded and said “yes.”
The name John is a biblical name and means “God has been gracious.” Talking to his foster father, Michael learned that John had not had an easy life. Both of his parents struggled with addictions, and John has since bounced from foster home to foster home. Michael thought about Ray Howell’s testimony, and could see a young “Ray” standing before him, and he instantly saw a boy with a huge future in God’s hands. “John, squint your left eye, then keep your right eye open, and finally relax your grip,” Michael told him. He immediately began to hit the target and he could see John’s confidence start to soar.
Now it was Saturday and the Centershot tournament was set up with 62 registered shooters, including John. In the end he shot very, very respectable to finish with a score of 162 out of 300. Not bad for his first time shooting competition! After giving out the awards we were scheduled to baptize three young people in the lake. As they were baptizing the last person, John wandered down and stood in the water. “John, why are you here?” Michael asked. “I want to be baptized.” he replied proudly. Surely God is gracious! John and his foster Dad have been in church the last two weeks, and Michael has been speaking to him about salvation and discipleship. To sum things up Michael said, “Remember, every child is just one caring adult away from success. Put a bow in the hand of a child and lead them to Jesus!“ Couldn’t have said it better ourselves Michael!
God Bless you!

Deuteronomy 6:5-7

From Living to REALLY Living a Life of Impact!

By Randy Spencer, Elkton, MD Champion

As we close out our 2nd year of Kicking Bear Camp I reflect back to the first time I met Ray and how I got to where I am today. In 2010 I was invited to the Shot Show in Florida where I heard Ray’s testimony at a Christian breakfast and little did I know how his story would impact me and that  I would one day be involved with this organization.

It took 4 years for me to reach out to Ray and discuss Kicking Bear and how our church could get involved. I was involved in a lot of things in our community including being a business owner and I loved the idea of this program and wanted it here in Maryland. So I talked it over with some close friends and we sat out on the task of raising money and holding camps here in MD. Our first fundraiser was a huge success and we raised over $50k and were able to purchase all the supplies to be self sufficient and have the camps at a local farm on the Bohemia River. Our first camp we had just over 300 people in total and what an exciting two days to watch God work. Kids and adults had smiles that could not be wiped off their faces.  The community loved Kicking Bear and everything about it.

While I loved the mission and giving back to the community, I was not leading the best life. Being a successful business man at a young age lead me to things that seemed fun at the time but was not a Christian lifestyle. I loved Jesus but I loved a lot of other things too.

In 2014 Jesus had his hand on me and pushed restart for me! I filed bankruptcy in June and lost everything I had or thought I would ever want. I was living a generous life not a God-lead life. I will never forget walking out of my attorneys office in Baltimore Md with tears running down my face it was like an elephant was on my chest, I could not breath I was anxious. My life was crumbling in front of me and I was not in control. I stopped and prayed and asked Jesus to bring me through this and I would give everything back to Him and committed to focusing on kids. The next year and a half was full of ups and downs. I realized we are not in control and it’s all in his timing.

In 2023 Ray’s brother in-law reached out to me and asked if I would consider being involved in Kicking Bear and becoming the MD chapter leader. I was super excited and could not wait to call him back to discuss. In 2024, we held our first banquet at same location we did in 2014. Roughly 230 people attended and it was a success. Our first camp was held that summer and it rained but still had over 100 attendees and we are gaining traction.

Our 2nd year our commitment to our community was to add a free event every year for families to attend. Our banquet had over 400 attendees and we are blown away by the work of our GOD. We were able to hold our first cat fish tournament and 90 people attended in June. Our second camp, we had just over 150 attendees and what a day it was. So many people came out and supported this event and can’t wait to do it again. To watch Ray interact with these kids is a blessing, he is truly a disciple of Jesus! I had interviewed some families as the day was coming to a close, I asked a mother what her favorite part of the day was, her response was I watched my son say the Lord’s Prayer and an hour later we baptized her son along with 7 other kids.

I have left the best story for last! I have a 6 year old son that keeps me going. Truth be told I love doing Gods work and setting an example for my son. This boy loves Kicking Bear and Ray and Kevin, he always talks about them. You have heard the story it’s not about what you have its about the legacy you leave behind. Weeks leading up to camp Levi and I were talking about being baptized and want it meant and he said dad I would like to baptized, tears of joy is all I can say. On August 16, I was able to baptize my son, as the tears flowed down my face I could not pray out loud but boy my heart was screaming for joy!

THIS MY FRIENDS IS WHAT LIVING FOR JESUS IS ALL ABOUT!

Take time to listen to people and their stories it may just change your life and thousands of others. Ray’s testimony at breakfast touched my life and here in MD, through Kicking Bear we have touched just at 700 people this year alone. This coming year we have a goal to talk to 2000 people in our community about Jesus!

The 2023 Kicking Bear Banquet

By Kevin Bonnar

“…not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” Hebrews 10:2

The annual Kicking Bear Banquet returned this year on May 11th. The ministry was blown away by how many amazing volunteers and sponsors stepped up to bring this event back after a three-year break. Banquet Champion Justin Briski led an awesome banquet planning team and as table/ticket sales opened up it was such a blessing to see the list of attendees grow and grow so quickly.

Over 750 people packed the Omni Center in Onalaska, WI and the night was truly amazing. We were blessed by Tammy Kohler who kicked off the night with the National Anthem which got everyone fired up for the night. Austin Siewert did a great job MCing the event as we shared a delicious meal, had various opportunities to win prizes, and just filled the room with fellowship.

During the program part of the evening, we shared a new video of Kicking Bear’s impact over the years, check it out here. We also celebrated the youth hunts by presenting some young hunters with deer mounts, turkey fans, and a bearskin rug that had all been harvested on Kicking Bear hunts. Seeing all the kiddos who have gone on hunts these past couple of years really was a powerful way of showing how many lives have been touched by the ministry and all the awesome mentors and guides who take kids hunting.

We also honored our beloved Karen with this video as Tammy sang Raise a Hallelujah. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house. This was followed up with Ray sharing the Gospel and the salvation poem. Tammy really blessed us again with her gifts that night by singing a beautiful song about the salvation prayer composed by Matt and Sherry McPherson. You could hear a pin drop as God moved through the words and the music. It was awesome!

One highlight of the night was when The Cheerful Giver Award was presented to longtime Kicking Bear family member Greg “Sarge” Symons. Sarge has served with such a beautiful heart for many, many years. Ray tells the story of Sarge pulling up to a camp years ago and noticing Ray needed a hand. As he would do for the next couple of decades, Sarge gave his “yes” and did what needed to be done to help families. Over the years Sarge has mentored kiddos, taught hunter’s safety, guided hunts, helped at camps/events, and just been the hands and feet of Jesus over and over again. Even the morning of the banquet Sarge reached out to me to drop off a turkey fan he had done for one of the youth hunters from this spring’s hunt. Then as we were cleaning up the night of the banquet, Sarge was one of the last ones to leave as he was helping stack chairs and roll tables. We pray continually for Godly men and women to step up and help fuel the work God does through Kicking Bear and we are so thankful for Sarge being an example of answered prayer and an inspiration for us all. THANK YOU, Sarge! Check out this video to see some memories from Sarge’s service over the years.

All of us on the Kicking Bear team just want to say thank you so much to everyone who volunteered, sponsored, and attended the banquet this year. It was the largest and most successful banquet to date and the real impact is still to be seen. The war chest is full and the funds raised are going to help fuel the ministry as we work hard to reach more kids and families with the love of Jesus and the hope of salvation through the Gospel. We are adding and training more regional champions, adding new camps in new areas, offering more hunting and fishing trips with kids and so much more. So, THANK YOU Kicking Bear family!

By Kevin Bonnar

To close out the month of January the Kicking Bear team headed to Topeka, Kansas for the Kansas Monster Buck Classic.  Ray, Kevin, Darren Grefe and Mel Howe drove down from the frozen bluffs of Minnesota and Wisconsin to meet up with Tom Lee, Tom Walters, Landon Cunningham, Kevin Murphy, Terry Miller and Cliff Long from Medicine Lodge, Kansas.  We were excited to have such a great group of volunteers and eager to be bringing Kicking Bear to a big public arena for KMBC!

Friday we got our camp all set up and really had a good time connecting our base camp crew with the Medicine Lodge guys.  The work went really well and the laughs kept coming.  By Friday night we had a booth set up in the main arena to meet folks and we had all our archery targets, tomahawk stations and even 9-square set up out in the rodeo arena, we were ready for some fun!

As the night went on we realized that this was going to be a little different from our usual camp set ups.  Because there was this awesome outdoors show going on in the main arena and families were coming and going, we really had to stay flexible with our plans and how we did our Kicking Bear stuff.  Normally we get that big group at the start of a camp and then spend a lot of time hanging out with them before we end camp with the big Gospel message and celebration.  This was different.  Families would come in and shoot with us, then maybe go walk around a bit, many would come back.  It left us scratching our heads a little as we really weren’t able to capture that big group and move them through our planned activities.  I mean as we turned the lights off Friday night I realized I hadn’t chucked a single marshmallow, the girls hadn’t beat the boys in tug of war, and what really had us rattled was that we didn’t have that big Gospel sharing moment.  If we would have judged everything off our man made plans, it really looked like we were maybe failing here.  But……with God, anything is possible!

As we gathered back at the hotel and began talking we realized God was up to something else with us in Topeka.  We realized that without the very large group, we were actually able to connect on a more personal level with families.  One particular family that caught us was the Rees family.  Adam and Tina had brought their three littles in and it was awesome. I got to shoot bow with Darron and Cora and boy were they on fire for archery and tomahawks!  As little three year old Cora stepped up and put that bow in her hands I could tell she was a little firecracker.  She was so excited to shoot a bow for the first time ever!!  We got her set up and she took aim at the javelina carefully, with a twinkle in here eye she released and whack, she made a perfect shot on target!!! Boy did we celebrate!  It was so great to then have time to get to know the whole family.  We got to see videos of the kiddos getting into the blind with their Dad last hunting season, heard about how Mom is actually the archer in the family, learned father Adam was a veteran and got him hooked up for our Kansas Veteran’s hunt, and we even heard about the miracle birth of the littlest Rees boy.  For this small town guy, my time with the Rees family Friday night really filled my heart up!

So, as we all said our goodnights that night we realized that we just needed to be thankful for such a great night connecting with families.  We were still a little puzzled about how we were gonna share the Gospel on Saturday, and my hands were a little twitchy from no marshmallows or tug rope….but we had smiles on our faces and joy in our hearts.   We hit the pillow knowing God was doing something and were excited for the rest of the weekend.

Saturday we were more ready to swing families through the arena in a different was and we realized that the Gospel was going to be shared by our actions more than anything, so we prayed for opportunities to meet new families and show them the love of Jesus with our hands and feet and bows and arrows!  God did not hold back.  Another 100 plus kiddos came through that day in the arena and brother Mel could barely grab lunch as hundreds of other folks were stopping at the info booth inside to check out calendars, watch Kicking Bear videos on YouTube and hearing all about the ministry.  One thing we noticed on Saturday was that a lot of families were coming back!  We saw the Rees family again and little Cora fired off another couple dozen arrows this time going after the carp target!

Another return visitor on Saturday was a young man named Wyatt.  There was something different about Wyatt, I noticed it Friday night and was so glad to see him come back Saturday.  When we closed camp down on Saturday night we were all gathered round and by now we had realized that God wanted us to connect with people and families in Topeka on a deeper level.  The Medicine Lodge camp is coming up the first weekend of June and many families said they were going to try and make that, we also had a lot of families hearing about Kicking Bear for the first time and lots of kiddos shooting a bow for the first time, so all in all, we were really excited about what God had done connecting folks.  Tom Lee asked the group of us if anyone stuck out though, did we make any real good connections.  We shared about many families, but I just felt the Holy Spirit bringing Wyatt back to my mind.  I remembered him from Friday night.  We were working hard to figure out if Wyatt would shoot right or left-handed and it wasn’t easy…..haha.  We had him try a couple different things and even shoot from both sides, eventually we landed on shooting right-handed even though he does most other things lefty.  But, there was just something about young Wyatt, he had a kindness and joy to him that really drew not only myself but a few of the other guys too.  So, we decided we would like to give a bow away to Wyatt as he had shared with a couple of us his interest in bow hunting.  Tom Lee checked the registration forms and reached out to Wyatt’s mom to let her know, and that is when things got really wild!

Wyatt’s mom Lacie was immediately brought to tears when Tom reached out.  She shared that Wyatt had quite a story and that she just knew him being at Kicking Bear that weekend was no mistake.  Wyatt had come to the event with his Grandpa on Friday night and then eagerly brought his Mom back on Saturday.

Lacie shared, “He was just so happy and kept talking about Kicking Bear and saying come on Mom, follow me, these are my people.”

We are so thankful he came back and we got to learn more about Wyatt’s story because it is an amazing one!  You see Wyatt was bullied pretty severely back in 4th grade,  it got so bad the family reached out to the school for help, tried all sorts of things to make it stop, but it just got worse.  Wyatt shared with me that it really brought him to a scary low point in his life.  Wyatt had a support network though and he even started going to church with his Dad during the summer between 4th and 5th grade.  Somewhere in there Wyatt made a choice, he took a stand and decided he wasn’t going to let the bully beat him down anymore.  Wyatt shared that his heart was that he wanted to stand up to end the bullying and he also wanted to make sure that if anyone else was being bullied that they knew he supported them too.  Another beautiful thing Wyatt shared was that he really just wants peace for all, he said he would love to someday go to a basketball game and cheer for his former bully, he understands that bullying usually comes from hurt people and also that bullies sometimes need help too.  What an awesome heart posture and message!

So, Wyatt with the help of his Mom Lacie started the non-profit You’ve Got a Friend.  The mission was to end bullying and help people that needed help, because as Wyatt says, “nobody should be alone”.  What an inspiration for us all!  Wyatt’s organization really is the hands and feet of Jesus in Topeka, they help pay lunch balances, stock Blessing Boxes around the city, pack summer backpacks for kiddos, and are generally on the lookout to help anyone in need.  I hope you visit their Facebook page linked above and join forces with them.  They shared that they could use help filling the Amazon wish lists for supplies, are always accepting donations to help with resources, could use some more manpower in the Topeka area and generally would just love to add more people to You’ve Got a Friend so that the organization can do more good!

As Wyatt had told his mom on Saturday, “these are my people”…and I really feel like that was the message for our trip to Topeka.  We found a whole bunch of “our people”!  We were able to host a prayer breakfast Sunday morning before heading home.  The Rees family came back to join us, as did Wyatt and his Mom, our friends from Big Bucks Plus, and many other folks too.  As Ray shared the Testimony of Kicking Bear on Sunday we finally had that big group share of the Gospel and it was awesome!  Hearing about how Ray was bullied as a kid and then knowing Wyatt was there hearing that, well, you can’t plan those things folks and they matter in the Kingdom of God.  God is so awesome and we all felt so encouraged by the events of the weekend.  We closed the morning with the call to all to know Jesus and to give their heart to the Lord!

Thank you so much to Tyler and his crew at the Kansas Monster Buck Classic for having us down.  Thank you to the great Kicking Bear volunteers that traveled to this event. Thank you to all the awesome families we met, hope to see you all in Medicine Lodge in June!  Most importantly thank you God, for reminding us that you always have a plan and that if we show up with a good heart, good attitude and a smile on our face……you will use that because we are all “your people”. 🙂

Awesome August

By Kevin Bonnar

Our first camp of the month was in Linton, IN with our Kicking Bear Indiana team and hosted by the awesome crew from Shooter’s Archery led by Josh and Krysten McDaniels.  This camp has such a diverse menu of activitiesfor families including fishing, archery, trap shooting, fur trappers, bowfishing, tree stands, flu-flu shooting and so much more!  This year’s camp was awesome and we want to thank the entire Linton community for their support and participation in this longstanding camp!

Our next weekend was a double up as we had camps in Kimball, MN and Elkton, MD.  Our Minnesota camp is hosted by our friends from Flex Seals and led by David and Melody Joseph.  The site for camp is called the Preserve and it is an awesome place for a camp.  This camp has one of the most extreme slip and slides you have ever seen!!  Fun was had by all and after sharing the Gospel several youngsters stepped up to be baptized this year!!  Very thankful for the Joseph family and the community of Kimball for another awesome camp in northern Minnesota!

On the same Saturday there was a camp fired up by our KickingBear Maryland team headed up by Randy Spencer. Randy has really poured into getting things fired back up in Maryland this year. He worked hard to put on a banquet in the springs to raise funds for equipment and then did all the work to get a camp set up for this year too!  Randy and his son Levi even spent every night after work for a week and a half at the local fair shooting on the Safe Archery set up with families and inviting them all to camp.  Their hardwork paid off big as the camp was really awesome!  One highlight from camp was the local law enforcement bringing out their K-9 unit for a demonstration.  We are very thankful to be back in Maryland shooting bows and sharing the Gospel!

After being on the road a little bit the KB team returned to Wisconsin for a camp at Justin Trails Resort outside Sparta, WI.  This camp is headed up by our good friend Dawn Justin.  Justin Trails is a gorgeous setting for a camp and we are so thankful for it.  This camp had lots of community participation with a visit from the Gunderson life flight helicopter, the Sparta Area Fire Department, Sparta Ambulance and Sergeant Fischer from the Sparta Police Department.  Sergeant Fischer busting out the riot shield for the marshmallow fight is still being talked about in my house!!  We also had our friends from Child Evangelsim Fellowship bring out their Good News Club to share the Gospel and provide face painting and Pastor Matt from Horizon Christian Fellowship gave an awesome salvation message for all.  Very thankful for an awesome camp up here in our neck of the woods!

Our last event for August is one that has really become one of our most popular for families and that is our Kicking Bear Bowfishing event hosted by The Siewert Group and this year’s planning was led up by Nkaonyia Yang.  We are so thankful to have the support of the Wisconsin Bowfishing Association and AMS Bowfishing for this event.  The selfless dedication of so many boat captains to bring out their boats and guide for us every year is so awesome and AMS even donated a complete bowfishing set up that one lucky kiddo took home that night!  The weather was perfect which was a real blessing after getting stormed out twice last year.  After dinner Pastor Kevin shared a message with all about how fishing can be a greatway to connect with God.  We then lined up the captains and started filling boats. Ten boats headed out on the mighty Mississippi River that night and the action was non-stop.  We are so thankful for this event and we love that so many families get to enjoy such a unique outdoor activity together!

August was really packed with some awesome opportunities for the ministry and weare so thankful.  A month where we really got to partner with folks in unique ways and also a time to be thankful for local leaders across the country who step up to lead teams for camps.  We are so grateful for our Kicking Bear family and all they do each camp season.  While we still have a couple camps and events lined up for this fall we are also excited to be entering the hunting season!  Please join us in praying over all the mentors and mentees who will be out chasing critters this fall.  God is good and we are thankful!!

Kicking Bear’s camps are FUN and FREE!  Did you know that for 25 years, all camps and events have been completely free of cost for all participants?!!  We don’t want finances to be a barrier to block kids from hearing about the good news of Jesus Christ.

Camps cost approximately $7,500 or $50 per child.  Would you consider providing the funds needed for a camp or for a few kids to attend free of cost?   If God is prompting you to give please, give here : https://staging.kickingbear.org/support-us/

Kicking Bear is seeking to continue to live out James 1:27 and we are asking for your support to continue to do so.

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” ‭‭James‬ ‭1‬:‭27‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Foundation for Hope Deer Hunt 2022

Kicking Bear closed out the month of October by heading up to Grayling, Michigan to join forces with Tony Semple and The Foundation for Hope on their annual deer hunt. The hunt is hosted by Cedar Hollow Lodge and this year five young hunters and their families came out to chase some dreams of hunting a big buck. These young men are on a wish list hunt and all the prayers were that the big boys would come out to play.

The hunting started off with a bang as Gavin brought home a monster! His buck weighed in at 287 lbs and he had set the bar high for the weekend. His buddy Carson was hot on his heels with a big boy nicknamed “Moose” because of his webbed rack. Carson was all smiles as his friend Craig helped guide him through the hunt and he got to share his monster buck with his family!

Many of the hunters were using a set up called a guardian gun. With this equipment guides are able to help overcome some of the physical challenges for the hunters. With the help of computers and cameras they guides can help hunters get their aim locked on, then with the push of a button from the hunter the guardian gun which is located outside the blind will fire. Such a cool way for technology to help make something really cool happen for hunters who just need a little help.

Eric and Zack were the next hunters to get on the board! Eric was on the hunt with his father and shot a nontypical buck that you just have to see to believe. What an awesome experience for a father and son! Zack and his brother were on the hunt together coming up from Ohio.  The brothers came back to camp smiling as Zack brought in a dandy of a buck. Through Saturday evening the hunting had been great!

Throughout the weekend there were times for meals to be shared and hunting stories to be swapped. A crew even came in and made wood fired pizzas for the hunters and their families. Times of worship were also shared and joy filled singing around the fire filled camp.

Sunday morning brought one last chance for Travis the only hunter left to fill his tag. Travis was on the hunt with his Dad and Ray had the privilege of helping guide them. They nestled into a blind called “the doe’s nest” and were ready to see if any bucks would be swinging by looking for a girlfriend. This crew was using the guardian gun and everything was locked in as a giant buck came out and gave them a clear shot, Travis pushed the button but something got gummed up, the gun clicked, but did not fire. Blake was guiding with this group as well and he went out to check the gun. He pulled the shell and the pin had hit, but for some reason the gun did not go off. Actually, the whole guardian gun set up was failing now, so Blake went into special operations mode and as quietly and quickly as he could he set up a new guardian gun. After all, this is Sunday, the last day and Travis still needed to fill. They were back in action now, but the buck had run off.

The pressure was starting to build as time was running out and it wasn’t looking good. But just then another buck popped out into the clearing, the problem was that the buck was a smart one and had positioned himself just outside the range of the guardian gun, it just wouldn’t turn enough to get crosshairs on him. But God is good and Blake is a hero, he snuck out again and was able to reposition the gun and not scare off the deer! The crosshairs lined up perfectly and Travis made the perfect shot!! Smiles, fist bumps and hugs filled the blind in celebration as Travis had gotten his buck!

“Really you come here and it is unbelievable, the food and all the stuff, the fellowship. Listening to other men of God sharing their testimonies and sharing with these kids, even myself being able to spend time with Travis and his Dad in the blinds and talk to them about Jesus. I mean it is really a wonderful place to be able to share the Gospel and let these kids know that God has a purpose for them.”-Ray Howell

Trunk or Treat with Kicking Bear Kansas

Kicking Bear Kansas was able to participate in the Trunk or Treat held at our local Assembly of God church, which is one of our local churches that helps put on our camp. We were able to pass out, not only candy, but some fun scripture-based activity books and over 100 New Testament bibles!! It was a fun night of showing God’s love to hundreds of kids, on a night that can surely use some of God’s shining light.   We would like to send a big thank you to pastor Rodney and his wife Kandace for letting us be a part of a great event they started many years ago!!

These community partnerships between local churches and Kicking Bear chapters is all part of our ministry vision for next year! So cool what God is doing through these loving relationships.

“Pray to the Lord of the Harvest”

By Chrissy Wojcik

As I considered whether to share the depths of this with all of you or to just keep it between myself, the Lord, and a few others, it became clear to me that this one was to be shared with the masses to give all glory and honor to the Lord.

This is my testimony of Kicking Bear’s Unity Through Community Camp on March 17th, 2024 out at the Omni Center. By: Goose (aka. Chrissy)

One morning, waking in August of 2023, after having a discussion with a few people the day before about the needs of the many, carrying home the heaviness of how hopeless it all seemed… I woke up to the phrase “Pray to the Lord of the harvest.” And I immediately thought to myself… oh…duh… the solution-less problem was already given a solution; Matthew 9:35-38, emphasis on verse 38… “And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few;” … I’m going to pause right there to simply reflect on the fact that Jesus feels it too; he sees all the heartbreak, confusion, pain, and the deep hunger to fill emptiness, and he has a deep compassion over the plentiful lost; and he knows… when you feel the weight of the world, remember that he feels it just the same as you do, and even more deeply than you—he is the man of sorrows (Isaiah 52-53)… but then he goes on to say, in verse 38 of Matthew 9: “38 therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”

The Kicking Bear team has a text thread that we utilize nearly every day–sharing Bible passages, our thoughts on scriptures, devotionals, words of encouragement, prayers, etc., and I felt compelled in my spirit that we were to pray as a team earnestly to the Lord of the harvest, that he would send laborers into his harvest field after pondering on what was impressed upon me that morning… now, I’m not sure if I had that fully right; that might have simply been my personal assignment… but this text thread kept me mostly accountable to the “earnest” piece of that; so I filled the team in on what I felt the Lord was calling us into… and proceeded to send a prayer to the Lord of the harvest to the text thread nearly every day for about four months… ha… No one fessed up that this got old, but eventually, I missed a few days here and there and did peter out, and have since been either randomly writing a prayer down in my own notes or just simply praying in my heart to the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into his harvest field… And the beauty is that in my weakness and short-comings, He was strong, and He is strong, and He remains faithful, even when we give him a weary yes that doesn’t follow through perfectly; he knows we are but dust, and he delights to works with that… it’s how he chose to create us…

Part of this earnesty of prayer was fulfilled in YOU on March 17th (and beyond)… I’m not sure that my assignment is complete in that prayer—I didn’t even realize I had been praying for all of you until Ray waltzed into the office one day in December and said “we’re taking over the Omni Center! All the churches, all the ministries, all the youth programs…”—because the harvest field is great upon the earth and there are many laborers still needing to be sent out all over the world… but the Lord is kind, and he produced over three times the amount of volunteers we had estimated to need for March 17th (we just saw that written on the white board the other day… we wrote down an estimated need of 40, and we received around 130…). Thank you… thank you for answering a call of being sent out into the harvest field in this way; I pray that the Lord increases his love over you and upon you, that he would open your eyes and ears and hearts in even greater measure toward who he is and to the things he is doing; that he would increase wisdom and strength upon the call he has for each of your lives–to himself and for his greater Kingdom work on this earth.

Then… when it came time to gather the harvest and about 2 weeks before Camp, there were only about 60 kids registered… I asked the Lord what his strategy was to gather the harvest to the Omni Center that day; “Lord, you’ve provided the laborers; what is your strategy to bring in the plentiful harvest?” I thought he’d give me some advice on promotional ideas… and all I kept sensing from him was “keep praying,” and that little strategies would come without me striving for them, but “Keep praying to me—the Lord of the harvest—I will bring the masses in, a plentiful harvest beyond imagination.” I specifically sensed that the pre-registration numbers weren’t going to mean anything at all to the actual count of the day… that the Lord was saying, “don’t pay attention to those numbers, I’m going to flood the harvest in.” So I didn’t really, and I just kept praying in faith and joy of what the Lord would do… and the Lord did as he said, once again… I was enamored, but not surprised. He is faithful and he does what he says he is going to do… There are so many little details beyond just these within what the Lord did; miracles that the whole team saw happen—the drawstring backpacks increasing to more than double what Kevin had initially counted; the registration going from around 300 kids to over double that (plus adults… still not sure on official numbers), but not so high to an increase beyond what Pizza Ranch could provide (they literally made all of the pizzas that they had dough for); and my favorite… the baptism water staying hot for 24 hours after Pastor Lynn and I filled it… I was convinced on Saturday that it would still be warm for baptisms on Sunday, and my beloved brother Kevin outright said, it would be a miracle if it did… well, it wasn’t just warm, it was a comfortable hot… God is the greatest dad, simply for doing that.

I share all of this because I really am not anything special in and of myself beyond any of you… I have never worked an office job or been trained in any administration; I had no idea how to operate an Xcel Spreadsheet, relying on my husband, my coworkers, and google to show me all the neat tricks in there, and I am still learning; I’m someone who is shamefully late most of the time (but I’ll always surprise you, once); and I’m easily distracted, so my organization only comes in waves of energy when I get excited about whatever it is that I’m doing… In all reverent truth, I was not the one who brought all of you volunteers together, nor was I the one who brought the massive crowd of people and children into that building… It was truly all the Lord and I simply partnered with what I felt he was calling me into, what I felt was his will; I served him and obeyed him, and prayed earnestly, receiving that which I asked for, knowing that I would receive what I asked because it was in accordance with his will (1 John 5:14-15). And all throughout the two months of preparing for the 17th, in my struggles with discouragement and sin, THE LORD graced me with forgiveness and the ability to simply hand it back to him in faith and say your will be done, whatever it looks like—and with that, he put all the right people in place who said yes to their personal assignments from him. That thing about the puzzle pieces I sent out earlier is true. And that doesn’t mean no one else could do this job at Kicking Bear… it means that no one else can do what you or I have been created and destined specifically by the Lord himself to do in such a time as this in his Kingdom on this earth; he wants you to do it; he wants me to do it; he created us in a way that we would do it exactly as he foresees it all fitting together—in whatever area we happen to be doing it; the little things matter—prayer matters; prayer is relationship; communing with the Lord matters; loving one another in deep brotherly love and communing in unity matters… and no one will get it right all of the time, but your heart posture is what he sees, what he wants—it is what matters. I encourage you all to partner with the Lord in all that you think or feel he’s asking of you; he is faithful to complete every good work he has started in you, and one day he will say “well done, my beloved.”

1 Corinthians 1:25-31 “For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men. For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.” All the glory and honor to the Head–who is Jesus, for the humbling and joy-filling beauty of the fullness of his name… for now we see in a mirror dimly; but then, we will see face to face; then, we will know him fully… just as we have been fully known (1 Cor. 13: 12).

I’d like to end this in prayer, if you would partner with me: Thank you, Father for all that you are… thank you that the vastness of your Father heart is beyond our comprehension, but that you give us these small tastes that fill us up to overflowing every time you touch us with your love. Lord thank you that you know us… fully, beyond even our knowing of ourselves—that you see beyond the dust and the shame and you delight in your creation, eagerly stating, “that is good” when you look upon us, stumbling when we attempt to walk, but determining to keep getting up to run our race and one day win life in you, to know you fully, just as we are fully known. Thank you, Lord, that you are the promise keeper and that with our simple yes, you still do all the work so that we couldn’t possibly screw anything up on the whole of your plans and purposes or take any of the credit unto ourselves. Holy Spirit, thank you for working in us the fruits of your love, that we might be able to be the Body to the Body and grow up in love and unity toward Christ, the head, our covering and our Bridegroom; that you might work mysteriously through us, that children and people we meet would miraculously see—truly see—only Jesus when their physical eyes gaze upon the fruits of the Spirit that you clothe us in. Thank you, Lord for all that you did on March 17th in this region to unite the Body of Christ and all that you have continued to do since, and all that you will do beyond today; we are hungry and eager to partner with you in all that you have as One Church. One Christ. One Ministry. And One Thing that we seek and ask to have as an inheritance for eternity. Lord, you are beautiful… Maranatha-come Lord Jesus. Amen.

One of our goals for 2023 was to embrace God’s vision of expansion and new opportunities for Kicking Bear Ministries!  We shared this vision with our leadership team over the winter and added a component of training champions within the ministry so that we could reach even more families with our evangelism camps.  Father’s Day weekend was a great example of how God is equipping Kicking Bear teammates to increase the opportunities and regions for our evangelism camps.  Check out the diversity of these four camps that all happened on one weekend in June!

4 Points Kicking Bear Camp, Pampa, TX

By Kevin Bonnar

Cal and Becca Ferguson and their family have been hosting the 4 Points camp for over 15 years.  It has been incredible to see how the ministry work of camp has really impacted this small town in Texas and all the great families who attend camp year after year.  Campers are treated to an archery coarse with over 30 targets, a Kicking Bear tough course, train rides, fishing, bb guns, tomahawks, and when the Texas heat fires up a big ole water fight and much, much more!  This year’s camp was another great one with 20 salvation and 12 baptisms, there was so much to celebrate!  Check out more about the 4 Points Camp and the story of how the Fergusons got involved with Kicking Bear here: The Pampa News.  And stay connected with the Pampa Camp @ 4 Points Kicking Bear Camp.

Camp Send-A-Kid, Holmen, WI

By Kevin Bonnar

Kicking Bear has an amazing opportunity to partner with the folks from the Boy Scouts of America-Gateway Area Council at Camp Send-A-Kid up in Wisconsin for many years now. This camp invites local kiddos up for a real deal camp experience, complete with tent sleeping, camp food and songs and all kinds of outdoor fun. This year Kicking Bear headed up for two days and taught kiddos archery, tomahawk throwing, field games, tug of war and even had a marshmallow fight!  Pastor Kevin was able to give a message to campers and we are just so thankful for this annual partnership.  Learn more here Camp Send-A-Kid.

Ontario, WI Kicking Bear Camp

By Ray Howell

It is so amazing to witness God, revealing his vision right before your eyes! Many years ago, God gave a vision on a three-year plan with all the new camps starting for Kicking Bear. The plan goes like this. The first year we are there to equip them not only with extra volunteers, but also all the equipment. The second year we help equip them and bring in new volunteers from their area. The third year they are on their own and we come just to observe, and make sure everything is done right.  This year was the third year for Ontario Wisconsin. Again, we witnessed God take the whole community and turn it into the most awesome Kicking Bear Adventure camp, right in the middle of town. They close off all the streets to the middle of town and this huge area was turned into a big KB camp. When I got there, they told me they didn’t need any help just go have fun. So I did, I started a water fight. It was incredible to witness all these warriors for Christ step up to change kids lives in their community through their service. All the fun, Archery, Tomahawks, BB guns, tug-of-war gunny sack races, etc. It was all done just the way the KB handbook shows. After supper more games and later a marshmallow fight broke out, everyone was hooting and laughing, and having fun. What a blast!

Later Pastor Chris used the life bow from Genesis, to share the gospel. As everyone listened so quietly you could have heard a pin drop in that crowd. Following the message the Salvation poem was prayed with all the kids and adults alike. What an incredible sound to hear, as the crowd was saying the prayer out loud together. There were many decisions for Christ! I had tears in my eyes the whole day witnessing God’s victory, pulling kids off the streets and letting them know that no matter what their troubles are God has a purpose for them, and that purpose is for good!

Huge thank you to Pastor Bruce from Grace Community Church and all the awesome volunteers that did an amazing job taking the reigns and providing Ontario with an awesome camp experience!

Whitetail Habitat Solutions Kicking Bear Event, Minnesota

By Ray Howell

We had an awesome Father’s Day at the Whitetail Habitat Solutions camp hosted by Jeff Sturgis and his fiance’ Jen. Jeff and Jen are incredible people who want to make a difference in communities and in kid’s lives by getting them off the streets and introducing them to the outdoors and all God’s creation has to offer. Even though it rained that day we never stopped with all the fun and games. Jen is also just a big kid! Archery in the woods while it’s raining was really awesome! While the kiddos were shooting bows Jeff took folks out and showed them how to manage their properties for big deer. I had the opportunity to share my testimony and let people know that God is working in their life also. It is amazing to see people like Jeff and Jan who take the time and step out of their everyday busy lives to help others. There were lots of prizes donated by their sponsors, along with all the food you could eat. Not only did we have lots of fun, but Whitetail Habitat Solutions was also helping us raise funds so we can keep impacting more communities and families. God is amazing and we are very thankful!

Opening Doors for New Hunters

By Pastor Kevin

This month we are taking a look at how God has used our friend and new mentor Aaron to serve in Kicking Bear over this past year.  Last month I shared how God has equipped me to serve in this ministry, this month we hear about how God uses the already equipped to serve with KB too.  Read on to find out how Aaron did taking out not just one brand new hunter to chase a dream, but two first time hunters this past year!!

Brother Aaron remembers being the little brother who grew up with a hunger in his belly to go out hunting with his Dad and older brother.  Growing up in Onalaska, Wisconsin he had to wait patiently for his 12th birthday when he finally was old enough to head out into the woods with the big guys.  He fell in love with the sport of hunting, describing it this way, “I really, really took a love to God’s gift of nature and being outside. The fresh air.  The planning, the trying, and the learning of the hunt, I loved it all.”  Aaron shared that back when he was so hungry for learning it was a little different back then.  With no YouTube videos or social media yet a young Aaron would pick up hunting magazines or books and faithfully tune into Jim Carlson’s Outdoors every Sunday night to add to his skill set. Aaron realized at a young age he loved the planning and execution that goes into a good hunt, testing out much of what he learned out with his buddy on public land.  As a teenager he found early success hunting ducks, geese and pheasants, but after harvesting deer with both a rifle and bow, he was hooked on chasing whitetails!

Fast foward and Aaron got introduced to Kicking Bear in 2022 when he brought his family out to our camp at Justin Trails in Sparta. They all had a blast and Aaron was hungry to learn more about Kicking Bear.  On New Year’s Day last year Aaron joined us as we helped take down the rotary lights in La Crosse, WI.  It was a great opportunity to get to know him better as we teamed up rolling thousands of lights on a giant spool. I quickly realized that Aaron had a real passion for hunting and as I explained how our mentorship program helps many kiddos get out on their first hunt, he was all in!  He reflected on our early conversation like this, “I could tell there was an opportunity to help other kids who may not have the opportunities I had learning how to hunt growing up.  They might not have someone to help them build that foundation to be in the outdoors and learn how to hunt and fish.  I want to be that person.”  That was music to my ears and we wasted no time getting Aaron plugged in.  He started volunteering at events right away and also gave a big “yes” to help guide on our upcoming youth hunts.

Aaron’s “yes” was just what we needed as we planned the spring turkey hunt last year with some new hunters on the roster.  We do our absolute best to get all kiddos interested out into the field for our hunts, so having so many awesome godly men and women step up each season is a HUGE blessing, thank you all so much!!  I paired Aaron up with a kiddo we all knew named Johnny, you may know Johhnny too, he is the youngest of the Mobley family who have been a part of Kicking Bear for many years.  His older brother Gray and sisters Vicky and Catherine had been on hunts in the past and it was time for young ten year old Johnny to go on his first one.

Aaron did a great job guiding on Johnny’s first hunt.  They all met the weekend before as we set blinds and Johnny got to shoot a shotgun for the first time.  The next weekend they were ready to go! Aaron shares that as they settled into the blind on Saturday morning young Johnny was not the only one experiencing firsts on this trip, “I did something new to me, it was the first time I had ever prayed with other people in a blind to open a hunt.  So with Johnny and my son Luke with me, we prayed that morning for health, saftey, thanks for the wilderness and of course for a successful hunt.”  That morning sit was a success as they heard lots of birds and it was a great opportunity for Aaron to share wisdom with the boys about hunting and life.  No turkey for Johnny yet, but spirits were high and things were just getting started.  The boys headed back out for the afternoon sit and after getting settled in and gazing across the field for about 20 minutes Johnny spotted a bird!!

“This turkey comes into the decoys and stops.  I whisper to Johnny that it might be a jake and we can wait for another if we want to, but he was having none of that.  He put the sights on that turkey and that was it, he made the perfect shot.  Johnny drops this turkey and we go running out, high fiving and chest bumps,  then take some pictures.  These kids were having fun and here on Johnny’s first day of hunting, he was lucky enough to shoot a turkey!”.  This was exactly the type of dream that Aaron had felt called to help kids chase back on that cold morning wrapping lights with me. He had helped Johnny chase his dream of going hunting and they were successful!

Next up was our big Wisconsin Youth Deer Hunt and again I was in a tight spot trying to find enough guides for all our eager hunters.  The way things turned out I needed Aaron to take another first time hunter out, this time a young nine year old named Rylee.  Again, Aaron started things out with Rylee by hitting the gun range and getting him comfortable shooting.  He did great and Aaron was excited to have him using the same .243 rifle that his father had taught him on back in the day.  To add to the camaraderie of the hunt Aaron again brought his own boy Luke along for the hunt and as all three got settled into the blind that morning they again prayed over the hunt and it was go time. Their prayers were answered pretty quick that day as it wasn’t too long into that first sit and two bucks came right down the trail toward their blind.  After the excitement of watching them spar a bit they got set up for a shot, but neither buck would quite turn broadside for them.  Rylee was all smiles though and the boys were locked in now!  About an hour later a big ole doe comes walking down that same path and turns broadside. Rylee took the perfect shot and after a 30 yard scamper she went down.  The boys shared a quick celebration and then they decide to see if Luke could maybe get a shot on one too.  Sure enough, 15 minutes later a small buck comes down that trail.  Luke scoped him up and takes his shot, the deer stood for several seconds and then bounded off into the brush.  Aaron knew the gun was locked in, and they all thought Luke had made a great shot, but unlike the doe earlier they didn’t see it go down.

After waiting for about an hour so as not to spook a wounded deer they ventured out of the blind.  Aaron explained, “We got out of the blind and headed to Rylee’s doe first.  He lit up!! Big smile, high fives and pictures with his deer. It was awesome!”.  Now to find that buck.  They headed to the last spot they saw him and found blood, but no deer.  So they backed out and headed back to camp after gutting Rylee’s doe.  Back at camp a large group of young hunters gathered around as Aaron showed them all how to skin and butcher a deer.  “It was really cool that these kids were so into this part of the process. With all the YouTube and video games out there it was awesome to see them so focused and so into learning how to gut, skin and quarter up this deer.”  The lessons were not over though, they still had a deer to track.  Brothers Ray and Mark headed out with Aaron and the boys to see if they could find Luke’s deer.  Aaron shared, “Sure enough after about 10 minutes they all heard Ray’s “owl hoot”  and if you have ever been around Ray Howell, you know that when he hoots it is either because something awesome has happened or he wants to get the kid’s attention.  This time it was both!  Ray called the boys down and showed them some blood, letting them know he thought they must be close.  With Ray guiding them on the blood trail it took just a couple minutes and they saw a nice six point buck laying there!”  Both young hunters had success!  On a year when the overall success rate for youth weekend in Wisconsin actually dropped by 8%, Aaron had guided not just one young deer hunter to success, but two in one sit!!

I have since let Aaron know that he may just have to take out all of our first time hunters since he seems to have the touch for rookies!  He just smiled and in his humble way shared how thankful he was, “Just being with these kids means the world.  It brings me so much joy to see their smiles and guide them through their first hunt, it really means so much more than any hunt for myself anymore.

Sometimes kids don’t have these opportunities to get out and go hunting.  I have realized that the hunting and fishing knowledge and gifts God has given me are meant to be passed on, I am called to serve.  And if we don’t open our hearts and minds and lives to these children we might miss the opportunity to open these doors and give them these chances.”

Well Aaron, God has definitely used you to open some doors for young hunters and we are incredibly thankful for that!

Young Lives Changed Through Kicking Bear’s Introduction to Bowhunting

By Kyle S. Lipke

Author’s note: This article previously published by Pope and Young Ethic Magazine

Just west of Medicine Lodge, Kansas lies the gorgeous burnt-red Gyp Hills. This area is cattle country, as well as home to giant whitetails, a plethora of Rio Grande turkeys, great bass fishing, and one of 36 locations across the U.S. where Kicking Bear Ministries hosts its yearly archery camp. During the first weekend of every June, shouts of joy and laughter can be heard echoing across the landscape as hundreds of kids and their families come to this incredible location to attend Kicking Bear. It is one of the most thrilling adventure days of the summer that many of the kids in this community get to experience.

What is Kicking Bear?

Kicking Bear was established in 1999 as a youth outdoor program with the mission of ‘putting a bow in a kid’s hand and leading their family to the Lord, one-on-one.’ With a passion for kids lacking access or opportunity to archery, bowhunting, and time in the great outdoors, Kicking Bear has served to meet this need for more than 25 years by conducting archery camps, adventure days, and youth mentored hunting trips all over the country.

Unlike many outdoor camps that are stationary, Kicking Bear is a mobile camp that travels from state to state to host adventure days throughout the summer. The headlining activity is always archery. Kids get the chance to rotate through an archery course where there is an array of 3-D archery targets to shoot at. From beginner to advanced, these courses are set up to accommodate all ages and experience levels of archers. Since this is the first time that many of the kids attending have ever shot a bow, an archery instructor is stationed at each target along the course. These instructors make sure that each kid is properly fit with a Genesis or Mission bow and then safely guide the kids through the process of aiming and releasing an arrow.

The fun isn’t just limited to archery. Kids also get to learn the art of throwing tomahawks. Families can encourage each other to complete physically challenging obstacle courses. They get to grapple in competitive games of tug-o-war. There are engaging opportunities to pelt each other in friendly marshmallow or water balloon fights. Many camps also teach kids how to fish or find shed antlers. Often, the local DNR or game and fish department teach how hunting benefits the future of wildlife conservation efforts through the Pittman-Robertson Act, habitat improvement, population management, and the wise use of natural resources.

Kicking Bear Camps are offered completely free of charge. Finances are often a barrier to youngsters and their families getting to experience archery and other outdoor pursuits. Kicking Bear has never wanted money to prohibit a kid from getting the chance to shoot an arrow or go on their first bowhunt. This is why these events have been and will always be open at no cost to anyone who attends.

It has been by the grace of God and the generous support of donors, churches, and outdoor companies that Kicking Bear has been able to carry on its mission of changing lives without charging a dime. Kicking Bear has been blessed that the Pope and Young Club is one such group that has supported the ministry from the very beginning.

One-On-One Mentorship

Kicking Bear has been sharing the love of archery and outdoor adventures in the Gyp Hills for more than a decade. Due to the trickle-down effect, the number of lives that have been impacted or transformed for the better is hard to calculate. One thing is for certain, Kicking Bear has helped bring positive change to the community of Medicine Lodge and families beyond, through the connection of their archery camp.

Numerous young lives, having attended the Medicine Lodge Kicking Bear camp, were able to release an arrow for the first time. This ultimately led many of these youngsters to not only get involved in archery but to additionally form a desire to become bowhunters. In many cases, an introduction to bowhunting through Kicking Bear’s mentorship program has changed these lives forever.

During summer camps, such as the one mentioned in Medicine Lodge, Kicking Bear works to make connections with kids who are interested in bowhunting but may not have the means to do so. Kicking Bear then pairs these kids with local mentors who can provide year-long discipleship and bowhunting instruction. The purpose of these mentors is to give a means for these kids to go on hunts with a bow in hand, as well as to have positive role models that will help direct their lives down straight and narrow paths as they become young adults.

Young Lives Changed Through Bowhunting

Kicking Bear has stories from kids across the country about how bowhunting has positively influenced their lives. The following are simply a few examples from kids who attended the Medicine Lodge camp.

Tyce Lonker had never shot a bow until he attended a Kicking Bear camp. After connecting with his mentor in Medicine Lodge, Tyce spent a lot of time learning how to become an effective archer. This one-on-one time helped him learn how to correctly shoot a bow. With a new fire lit inside of him, Tyce began shooting more than ever in preparation for his first bowhunt.

He got his first taste of bowhunting the next spring. While tucked inside a blind, his mentor called a tom turkey into 15 yards. Tyce let loose a perfect arrow, starting his bowhunting journey! Referencing his bowhunting experience Tyce stated, “It really just opened my eyes. It was just awesome being that close! It took a lot more work, but it was a lot of fun!” When asked how Kicking Bear has influenced his life, Tyce said, “It’s helped keep me on the right path. There’s a lot of stuff out in the world that’s not too good. So, it’s helped me decipher the good from the bad and how to be on the good side of things.”

Kirk Fischer attended the first Kicking Bear camp in Kansas and several others thereafter. As a little kid, his favorite part about camp was the wild fun he had during the marshmallow fights as well as the slip n’ slide. He got started down the path of bowhunting when he received a bow from Kicking Bear at the first camp held in Medicine Lodge. After practicing all summer long, he was able to harvest his first archery deer, a whitetail doe.

As he got older, he became more enthralled with the pursuit of bowhunting. One November, after getting zero sleep due to a high school football game, Kirk climbed his stand in the predawn darkness. Tired as he was, he knew the bucks were going to be on their feet that morning. When a 162-inch buck trailed a doe beneath his stand, Kirk made good on his shot opportunity. The lack of sleep was well worth it! Kirk said Kicking Bear has helped influence his perspective on life, “It (Kicking Bear) got me more into hunting. Which brings you down to earth. It’s very real. It’s very humbling to be in the woods…I think that correlates to how I live my life. It has

strengthened my faith, and I think through that as a young man there’s definitely circumstances where you need your faith, and you use that as the backbone of your life.”

Kirk’s brother, Jake Fischer, also got into archery and bowhunting through Kicking Bear. His indoctrination into bowhunting came when he made an impeccable double lung shot from 22 yards on his first mature whitetail buck. Jake, who claims he is now a bowhunter for life, had this to say about Kicking Bear’s positive impact on his life, “It’s changed me. Putting a bow in my hand changed me and how I see everything. I love the outdoors. It will get you, too.”

Not only have these kids become young gentlemen who spend countless hours bowhunting each season, but they give their time to instruct archery to the next generation of kids at the local Medicine Lodge Kicking Bear camp. Additionally, they volunteer each spring to guide veterans on turkey hunts.

How to Get Involved

Having personally attended the Medicine Lodge camp multiple times, as well as dozens of other Kicking Bear camps throughout the U.S., I can attest to the power of influence these camps bring to kids and their families. Kids who are stuck in tough situations, don’t have the finances to get into archery, or would otherwise be sitting on the couch scrolling social media, get the chance to shoot bows and have the time of their lives in the outdoors. Each kid leaves Kicking Bear with a purpose to their life and a huge smile on their face.

Whether you are a young kid interested in getting into archery or bowhunting, are a person with a passion for sharing the outdoors through mentorship, you would like to volunteer your time serving at a camp, or you would like to help sponsor Kicking Bear through a personal or business donation, there’s an opportunity for you. Visit https://staging.kickingbear.org/get-involved/ to get involved. If you are interested in getting a Kicking Bear camp, adventure day, or mentored bowhunting program started in your community or email Chrissy at Chrissy@kickingbear.org.

Back in Benton

We closed out our 2024 camp season at Jackson Grove Baptist Church in Benton, IL the first weekend of November.  This camp has an awesome twist in that a group of Godly men led by Pastor Ron Wilson get together to bowhunt for whitetail deer during the week and then serve alongside us as Guides for the camp on the weekend.  These men come from places like Florida, Georgia, Michigan and more for a week of hunting, fellowship, bible study and serving together, how cool is that!

We had an awesome camp with the families on Saturday and what really stood out this time was when Pastor Kevin was giving the Gospel message it turned into this really cool opportunity for the kids to share their own knowledge of the Bible.  We were blown away by not just what they knew about Jesus, but also how bold they were in sharing it!  We had a really blessed time together and capped it off the next day with an awesome Camo Sunday church service as well.  Thankful.

Community Events

We were blessed to be asked to help with Olivet Lutheran Church of La Crosse’s annual Blessing of the Hunt again this year!  Fun night for families with a chili cook off, archery, games, and prizes.  Krysta shared her testimony and Pastor Kevin shared a Gospel message as we all blessed the upcoming gun hunt in Wisconsin with prayer and a time of worship.

We had a blast decorating our tree and participating in the Rotary Lights Parade last month.  If you are down at the lights make sure to look for the Kicking Bear tree decorated by our friends Nicole and Caden!

We have had so many kiddos and their mentors out chasing deer after the youth hunt this year!  It is so cool to see the dedication and celebrate the wonderful animals these young hunters are harvesting under the guidance of some really amazing men and women.  Thankful.

Looking Back – 2019 at a Glance

Kicking Bear Foundation’s 20th year began with our team members traveling to Louisville, KY, to attend the ATA (Archery Trade Association) Trade Show and be a part of the annual Target the Heart (TTH) Prayer Breakfast, which has grown over the past 8 years from a small spark to a blazing flame. Team Kicking Bear helped start and cultivate this prayer breakfast as a way to bring the gospel message to attendees. Each year, Howard and Julie Tripp organize this overwhelming event. Throughout the years, we’ve witnessed great victory in Christ, and hundreds of people have received salvation and/or rededicated their lives to the Lord.

Our 15th Annual Banquet/Fundraiser was humbling in all aspects. It helped us to do missionary work in Uganda with Shepherd’s Fold and Yahweh Ministries. KB team members took bows and arrows to the children and taught them fun new skills in a culture where fatherhood abandonment is horrific. These kids were hooting and hollering with new dreams God instilled in their hearts, just like kids in America do after attending Kicking Bear camps. We also taught the local people how to be self-sufficient by starting Bible studies and helping them expand their farming operations.

We were privileged to be involved with several organizations this year. We did speaking engagements and KB activities at wild-game dinners, conservation groups, the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF), Quail Forever and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF), just to name a few. God gave us these “platforms” from which we share the Gospel and also to find teams of people who want to bring Kicking Bear Camps and Adventure Days in their communities.

By the way, Adventure Days are an absolute blast! They’re much like our camps, but with all the activities packed into one day. We had several new Adventure Days this year. One was in Omaha, NE, where we teamed up with KB Teams from Minnesota, Missouri, as well as the Pope & Young Club, to share the Good News and teach kids new skills with bows in their hands.

God has allowed Christian churches to be planted in all areas across the United States, and KB has partnered with these ministries to help them with their community events. KB is an outreach to the churches and ministries, and by teaming up with them, we can get kids and adults who wouldn’t ordinarily attend church to attend these outreach events and hear the Gospel message.

God has given KB special “tools” such as bows and arrows, tomahawks, tug-of-war ropes and marshmallows to meet kids at their level. And by our actions — not just by our words — we can continue spreading the Good News.

We also had a family ice fishing day, special spring turkey hunts, shed-antler hunts, trout-fishing derbies and Muskie tournaments — all integral parts of the Ministry meant to bring volunteer mentors and youth together in fellowship. It’s been encouraging to see how both groups continue to grow in their relationships with one another, making lasting memories and friendships. It’s humbling to see so many mentors making one- and two-year commitments to be involved in these kids’ lives.

The summer months were filled with campouts, archery shoots and MudFest, which were all over the U.S. Our first camp of the year, held in Kansas, was preceded during the week by a KB veterans’ turkey hunt and men’s conference. Kicking Bear partners with other equally-yoked organizations such as Veterans Afield, Centershot Ministries, Hunt for Life Foundation, Foundation for Hope and Patriots of Praise. The veterans and their families all harvested turkeys! The camp was incredible, their largest camp to date. What really stood out were some of the pictures we received from kids throughout the U.S. who had started shooting archery at a young age at KB camps and are now chasing their dreams, harvesting deer, turkeys and lots of other critters. For instance, here’s Alexander from Kansas and the buck he harvested this year.

Our La Crosse camp, like many others, was an exciting event with 700 attendees. When Kevin Bonnar presented the message, numerous decisions for Christ were made, and the following day, 21 youths stepped forward to be baptized! We found out which kids did not have opportunities to get into the outdoors, and we paired up more than 50 youths with mentors who not only guided them in the woods, but also discipled them spiritually.

Since we started having KB camps in Maine 10 years ago, we decided to have kids and warriors together. This year in Maine, we again teamed up with Veterans’ Afield. Twenty-two moose tags were allotted to the veterans. It was exciting to spend time with these “anointed” heroes and help them accomplish their dreams by harvesting giant moose. Twenty of the twenty-two tags were filled! It’s amazing how the Holy Spirit guides us while fellow-shipping with warriors.

For many years, by the laying on of hands, we’ve witnessed God go to work and do miracles. Just one example is a woman who had a mass on her brain. After the blessing, she went in for the final scan before surgery. Guess what … the mass was completely gone!

The Bible is a compass to get us through this life, and every Word in it is true. If we convey that truth to others in the way we conduct ourselves, we’ll spread the love of Christ over our nation, one heart at a time.

December 27th, 2018

I had first heard about Kicking Bear in the fall of 2016 through a family friend who knew of my passion for the Lord as well as the outdoors and suggested it may be of interest to me. I was quick to agree and decided to participate as a mentor in the 2016 Kicking Bear Youth Hunt in Whitehall, Wisconsin, where I would meet my mentee, Takobie. Takobie, who was 12 years old at the time, got involved with Kicking Bear through the Boys and Girls Club of La Crosse. Takobie did not grow up in a home with a father figure to take him into the outdoors, so prior to this hunt he had never spent much time in the woods, much less shoot a gun.

The forecasted weather for the youth hunt weekend was 40’s and rain, but that did not stop the excitement of the 20+ kids and mentors who participated in the hunt. After target practice at the range, Takobie was comfortable shooting the gun and was well-prepared for the hunt. The first two sits of the hunt (Saturday morning and evening) were cold and rainy without a deer in sight, but the joking and laughing in the blind made time pass quickly, and Takobie learned why it is called “hunting” and not “shooting.”

On Sunday morning, the weather had cleared and we were immediately surrounded by deer, but none of them would present a good shot opportunity. Takobie learned to be patient and to wait for the right shot opportunity. This patience paid off when a mature doe worked her way into a clearing 50 yards away broadside, presenting Takobie with a perfect shot. Bang! He made a perfectly placed shot on his first deer ever. The raw excitement in his eyes after I assured him of his lethal shot was something that I will never forget.

From Mentor to Mentee - Kicking Bear 01

This hunt was the first of many adventures that Takobie and I would share together over the course of the next two years. We have done everything from ice fishing and archery shooting together to traveling to northern Wisconsin where he would harvest his first black bear on one of the most exciting hunts that I have been a part of!

From Mentor to Mentee - Kicking Bear 02

On the morning of the Kicking Bear Adventure Day event this December at La Crosse Archery, all of the volunteers were gathered in a meeting to decide which station they would be at to guide the youth in attendance. When asking who would be a guide on the archery range, Takobie was the first to raise his hand. It was at this moment that I realized how God has brought my relationship with Takobie full circle. This nearly brought me to tears to see the transformation of a shy young boy who, just two years ago, had never shot a gun or bow in his life to him stepping up to mentor other kids who may have grown up in a similar situation as he had. Takobie spent the entire day teaching other youth proper archery shooting form and techniques.

From Mentor to Mentee - Kicking Bear 03

In January 2019, Kicking Bear is launching a brand-new mentorship program in hopes to create more success stories like this and have a greater impact on those who need us most. In this new program, a godly mentor will commit to mentoring a kid for a minimum time period of one year and participate in an outdoor activity with them at least once per month. This provides a great opportunity for godly outdoorsmen and women in the community to give back to those who wouldn’t have otherwise fully experienced God’s beautiful creation.

If you consider yourself an outdoorsman, I can almost guarantee there was a single person in your life mostly responsible for introducing you to hunting or fishing, whether that be your mother, father, aunt, or uncle, brother or sister. Who had to shake you out of bed when the alarm sounded bright and early, who taught you to shoot a gun or bow, who was sitting next to you when you harvested your first animal or caught your first fish. The harsh reality is that not all youth are blessed with that person in their life. It is our mission to change that.

We are actively seeking mentors and mentees to be a part of this exciting new program. If you or someone you know may be interested in joining or learning more, please take a moment to forward this newsletter to them. To receive more information, please email info@kickingbear.org with the subject “Mentorship.” God Bless!

From Mentor to Mentee - Kicking Bear

By Ray Howell

26 Sept. 2018

I’ve known my friend Dan Smith and his son Hunter for several years. Hunter is a fun kid who likes to tell jokes, pull pranks, and better yet, he always has a smile on his face. In a conversation with his Dad, I discovered that Hunter had dreams of going hunting, but due to his limited mobility, Dan thought it would be impossible to do so. At that point, I told Dan that I was going to make some phone calls and that we were going to make this happen. I called my friend Craig Mortz, the founder of Foundation for Hope in Michigan, and explained the situation. Craig immediately responded with, “Let’s take him hunting!”

In early November of 2016, at Cedar Hollow Lodge in Grayling, MI, Hunter found himself in a blind. He was joined by his Dad and his guide, Ryan Gati—another incredible man who loves to help kids. Using a gun with the ability to place crosshairs on the target by viewing a screen, Hunter’s limited abilities suddenly disappeared. He was incredibly accurate and made a humane shot on a Whitetail deer, just like any other sportsman. On the second day of his hunt, Hunter harvested a magnificent dream come true—an 8-point buck. He was able to provide meat for his family for a year. Hunter has a new-found love for the outdoors, and similar to all sportsmen, he wants to pursue those dreams.

A Long Time Coming - Kicking Bear

Hunter had openly expressed his desire to hunt a black bear, so we made arrangements with my friend Joe Paul, a DNR Conservation Warden with the State of Wisconsin. Warden Paul is also the Co-founder of Oconto River Kids, (ORK) an incredible group of people whose passion is helping kids with critical illnesses to achieve their dreams through hands-on outdoor adventures. Annually, The Wisconsin Wildlife Federation (WWF) partners with ORK to choose one hunter to receive the WWF state Learn-to-Bear-Hunt tag for use in a WIDNR-sponsored program. Hunter was chosen as the recipient of the WWF bear tag in 2017. Warden Paul hosts a Learn-to-Bear-Hunt program annually in Price County, WI, and Hunter was excited to be chosen to participate in it.

Ryan Gati made the trip across Lake Michigan, bringing with him a specialized firearm system to help with this hunt, and once again, we found ourselves in a blind. This time, we were in northern Wisconsin. We had prepared for this weekend of hunting for months on end, and we were having the time of our lives. Getting to where we were going to hunt was quite complicated, and it took all three of us grown men to push Hunter’s heavy wheelchair through the rugged paths to the blind. On the very first night, in the last hour of daylight, a nice-sized bear walked in and started tearing up the bait pile. There are no words to describe the excitement we all felt! We came close to getting the shot we wanted, but unfortunately, it didn’t happen that night. Every time the bear was in the right position, we couldn’t get the red dot on him quick enough because he wouldn’t stop moving.

Several days went by without the bears coming in close enough for the shot. A few times, we saw the bears circling the bait area, but they wouldn’t enter. Eventually, another bear did show up, but again it wouldn’t quit moving and we couldn’t get the gun lined up for a shot before the bear got spooked and walked off.

The whole time, Hunter’s jokes kept us men on our toes—and with plenty of candy bars and donuts available, Hunter said to me, “Ray, if you get out of line, you know I will tell your wife what you’ve been snacking on!” That made all of us laugh! The most enjoyable moments of this hunt were just spending quality time together, telling stories and jokes, and pulling pranks.

Then, the very last night of the hunt was upon us. Everything was silent when one of the largest black bears I’ve ever seen walked into the bait area. The red dot was on the bear and he only needed to turn to give us the right shot angle, but just like he had a sixth sense, he backed out without any shot opportunity. We went from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows—the 2017 hunt was over. Joe said there might be an opportunity to get a tag for the 2018 bear season if he could locate a bear tag donor, which is made possible through the State of Wisconsin youth and persons with disabilities bear tag transfer system. Ryan Gati’s last words to Hunter that evening were, “Whatever it takes, I’m going to help you get your bear.”

That next year flew by, and in the spring of 2018 Warden Paul learned that a hunter who drew a bear tag for a 2018 season wanted to donate his tag to Hunter! The hunt was on! We found ourselves in northern Wisconsin heading toward the blind. Once again, Joe, Ryan, Dan, and I were going to be a part of Hunter’s bear hunt. This time, our equipment was a bit different. Hunter had a new Trackchair which allowed him incredible maneuverability, and Ryan had brought along the new gun—The Guardian. Brian Park, the founder of the Ray Park Foundation, had designed this astoundingly accurate and quiet gun. You could watch everything on the screen without even touching the gun. In fact, ORK was so impressed that they purchased the Guardian so that it will be available to more kids who require this specialized system.

During the first two days we saw bears again, but they didn’t come into our comfortable shooting range. On the third day, we were all in the blind having so much fun that Joe said, with a big grin on his face, “Maybe we should try to be a little quieter,” but he was instigating just as much trouble as we were.

Here we were again, the last hour of that day’s hunt. All of a sudden, Ryan exclaimed, “There’s a bear!” As we looked, we saw a huge bear about 100 yards out, walking towards the bait area. You can’t imagine how hard our hearts were pounding and how loud Hunter’s breathing was—the anticipation of the bear coming within range was indescribable. The closer the bear got, the more excited we got, and Joe once again told us to try again to quiet down… but this time, he wasn’t smiling—he was focused and serious.

The bear lumbered in cautiously and turned broadside at about 20 yards next to the bait. Joe gave us the “Ok”, Hunter touched off the trigger mechanism, and the bullet hit its mark. A perfect shot! The bear ran off about 50 yards and expired. For that first minute in the blind, it was dead silent—but just like a bunch of little kids, the hooting, yahoos, high fives and big smiles came out in total exhilaration at what had just happened. What an awesome experience!

A Long Time Coming 02 - Kicking Bear

Hunter made a unique bear claw necklace for each of us for a gift. Whenever I look at it or feel it hanging around my neck, it’s a reminder to me how God can orchestrate an opportunity like this—to involve a group of organizations that are focused on Him, all in order to help others achieve their dreams.

On Hunter’s “bucket list” are turkeys, antelope, and moose. We will see what God has planned.

“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have a dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.” -Genesis 1:26

A Long Time Coming - Kicking Bear

January 24th, 2019

I have hunted with my dad all my life. Growing up, it was a tradition to spend several days getting all the gear together, cleaning guns, and preparing for the best weekend of the year with my dad. This past fall, it just so happened that Austin Siewert, with Kicking Bear, was in the process of finding mentors to lead youth on the Kicking Bear Youth Hunt. He reached out to me about mentoring and I was quick to agree, looking forward to sharing my knowledge and experience and continuing the tradition that I grew to love.

As the details for the youth hunt were finalized, Austin informed me that due to the shortage of female mentors, I would be the only mentor to have two mentees, both of whom were from the Boys and Girls Club and had little experience with the outdoors, much less guns and hunting. At first, this made me nervous—to be a mentor of two young girls who knew nothing about each other. However, as the hunt got closer, I began to gain confidence in myself and in my ability to guide my two mentees to success on the hunt as well as guide them in their faith.

God's Plan Mentorship: How can YOU have an impact? 01

One day before the youth hunt, all the mentors and mentees met in the Gander Outdoors parking lot to travel to the hunting land together. That evening was the first time I met one of my mentees, Trinaty. I had previously met Kaylie at our gun sight-in a week before. Both girls, timid at first, quickly began talking and laughing with each other, as well as with Austin’s mentee, Takobie. When we arrived at Living Waters ~ Weddings, Retreats & Cabin Getaways, the place we were blessed to be able to stay, sleep, and eat at during the youth hunt, we had a few hours to explore, fish, and prepare for the morning hunt. Due to state law, we were only allowed to carry one rifle, so we had to decide who would shoot first.

In the girl’s cabin, morning came fast and early. Between excitement and laughs, Trinaty and Kaylie got ready for the cold morning ahead. When the rest of the girls were ready, we headed out to our tree stand. On the way to our stand, we spotted two does right off the path we were on, making the girls even more excited for the day to come. When we finally got settled into our stand, the girls nodded off as I took the first watch, promising to wake them at any sight of deer. After sunrise, Trinaty woke up and we began to talk about everything and anything, including hunting, family, God, and life, passing the time quickly until we headed in for lunch. That morning and evening, we did not see any deer. That evening, when all mentor/mentee groups reconvened at our meeting place, we got to see the deer that the other mentees had been blessed with, which had our hopes high for the next morning’s final hunt.

God's Plan Mentorship: How can YOU have an impact? 02

Morning again came early as the girls woke and got ready for another chilly hunt. In order to increase the odds of both Kaylie and Trinaty getting a deer, we decided to split them up. Kaylie stayed with me, and Trinaty went with Melanie, another mentor whose mentee had already gotten a deer the day before. We returned to our stand and remained hopeful that we would see some deer as the sun rose that morning. After the sun rose enough to see the cornfield in front of us, a shot rang out in the distance. I texted Melanie to see if the shot was Trinaty’s. She responded with yes and that they were waiting a bit before they got out of the stand to recover her 8-point buck (below). I was excited for Trinaty and was then even more hopeful for Kaylie to see some deer that morning.

God's Plan Mentorship: How can YOU have an impact? 03

A few hours passed when I turned around to see three doe walking in the woods behind our stand. I whispered to Kaylie to slowly turn her head to look. Once we were both looking at the deer, the doe had locked onto our scent and began snorting and stomping at us before they all ran away. I was disappointed that they fled and began to tell Kaylie that sometimes deer scent us before we can get a shot off, but suddenly, a big smile grew on her face and she whisper-screamed that she saw a deer right below our stand. I told her we had to be quiet and slow to set-up, so this deer did not hear us and run away like the others. After we got the gun ready and Kaylie was positioned just right, I told her to make sure she had the perfect shot before she took the safety off. When she was ready, the shot rang out and the deer turned around and ran back into the woods. She set the gun down and was very confident in her shot, stating that she remembered to follow the leg line up for the perfect shot, just like Ray Howell told her to do. After a bit of waiting, we got out of the stand to track her deer into the woods. We found blood below the tree stand and began to follow the blood into the woods until we spotted Kaylie’s doe a short distance from where she shot it (below). Now, we just had to wait for the Ranger to come pick us and the deer up to bring back to the cabin. The pure excitement in Kaylie’s voice was something I will never forget as she shared her hunting story with her new-found friends of the other mentees. After returning to the cabin, I was then also able to see Trinaty’s beautiful 8-point buck.

God's Plan Mentorship: How can YOU have an impact? 04

The Kicking Bear youth hunt is something that I will never forget, and I believe I can say the same for Trinaty and Kaylie. I asked them to share their favorite part of the hunt with me, and this is what they had to say: “I loved all of it. My absolute favorite part was when I shot my deer. I didn’t think I would get it, but I did. I also loved fishing with Abbi and having fun with all the other mentees… I can’t wait to go again” (Kaylie). “I loved being able to shoot my deer and staying in the nice cabin with the other mentees” (Trinaty).

Becoming a mentor on the hunt was one of the best decisions I have made, changing not only my life, but my mentees’ lives as well. After the hunt, Kicking Bear launched a new mentorship program in the La Crosse area that my mentees and I plan to take full advantage of. The mentorship requires the mentor and mentee to do an outdoor activity together at least once a month for a minimum time span of one year. On Thursday, January 24th, Kaylie and I signed this mentorship agreement together (below), and we are excited to continue growing in our friendship and faith.

God's Plan Mentorship: How can YOU have an impact? 05

To me, this experience and opportunity is not something that is given to just anyone. God Himself chooses a special person to be sent into a kid’s life to help guide them and give them someone to come to in times of need.

Kicking Bear is continually looking for more female (and male) mentors. If you or someone you know may be interested in these opportunities, please email info@kickingbear.org with the subject “Mentorship” or follow this link. #iamkickingbear

Looking Back – Our First Florida Camp

By Kyle Lipke

The chilly morning breeze died off on May 7th as the rising Florida sun cast its rays upon Skeeter Ranch in the town of Jasper. Kids and their families began to flow in from registration, newly fitted with Mission archery hats and Kicking Bear t-shirts. Hundreds were towed in on horse-drawn buggies, thrilled to kick start an incredible day of fun and just the second Kicking Bear camp of the 2016 season. From archery to bouncy house, pig chase to Monster truck, and everything in between, the stage was set for a Saturday of excitement, free of charge, which would get kids outdoors and allow the mission of Kicking Bear to be completed.

The events of the day were set up into stations from which kids could wander to and from, allowing them to experience each activity on their own time. At the 3d archery, BB gun, and tomahawk throwing courses, instructors would work one-on-one with the kids as they came through, showing and encouraging them correct form and technique. Being some of the most favored activities, kids came to these courses multiple times, trying to best their previous attempts or outdo their friends. Two bouncy houses were set up, providing kids the chance to let loose more energy while their parents eyed several old tractors that were brought in for display.

While waiting for their hand at the pig chase (kids would run after piglets in a small pen in an effort to catch them by the legs and put them in a cage), they tried their hand at football toss and human foosball. A monster truck was also in sight and kids not only had the opportunity to look at it and crawl inside, but they even got to go for rides in it! Face painting was also done and a coloring competition was held for the younger ones who were interested.

The morning was not relenting in fun and quickly it was time to dig into some great Southern barbeque sandwiches for lunch. But first, a group of teens presented some music skits for the kids and a couple of the teens stood up to give their personal Christian testimony. Ray Howell then gave his own testimony and the kids and their families were presented with the gospel of Jesus Christ, some for the first time.

Pastor Scott Yirka explained one’s need for a Savior, the eternal salvation that is offered through the death and resurrection of Christ, and what it means to become a follower of Jesus. Dozens of kids and several adults went forward, seeking to give their lives over to God. It was awesome!

Archery was so popular that it was reopened for another hour as kids continued to enjoy flinging arrows with Mission and Mini Genesis bows at 3D deer targets. Afterward, all the kids were gathered together to participate in field games including wheelbarrow races, crab crawls, piggyback rides, and tug of war. A police demonstration was then given on the use of dogs for detecting illegal drugs. Finally, to cap off the day, kids were gathered under a shade tree while Ray talked to them about the safety of handling marshmallows. Parents then came from behind, ripping open bags of marshmallows and throwing them at the kids. The infamous fight began and forty minutes of all-out fun ensued.

The high afternoon sun now beat upon the ranch as kids filed out the way they came, in horse-drawn wagons. The fun had subsided and the events were over, but not without the day meeting a wonderful success. Many kids spent the day learning, playing, and enjoying the outdoors. They got to experience activities such as shooting a bow, riding a monster truck, and pelting people with marshmallows, things they would not have the chance to do elsewhere.

Hoots and hollers of excitement were shouted all day as kids spent time having fun outdoors where they were away from the cell phones, video games, and the struggles of everyday life.

Even more importantly, the message of Jesus Christ was shared with these kids. That is the mission of Kicking Bear, get kids outdoors and introduce them to the Lord. That mission was completed at Skeeter Ranch and will continue to be completed throughout the nation as the Lord works His perfect will through the ministry of Kicking Bear.

Sharing Jesus in July
By Kevin Bonnar
July was a great month for camps and events for us!  We had our first camp ever at the Whitehall/Pigeon Rod and Gun Club in Wisconsin this year.  Teaming up with Kevin and Leah Kubis for this event and it went great!  One highlight of the night was when a young lady fishing off the dock pulled in a monster snapping turtle!!  We also had an impromptu military fly over while on the archery range.  Was a beautiful summer night and after all the fun we shared the Gospel message with all.
Next up we traveled to Roscommon, MI to team up with our good friend Micheal Ritchie and some really amazing Centershot Ministry Archery teams to hold a two day camp at Bambi Lake Retreat and Conference Center. On Friday night we tore it up Kicking Bear style with loads of fun and several trips down the “booyah” water slide!  We gathered by the fire that night and God put it on my heart to speak of the narrow and wide roads and the importance of being on the right road in our lives, the road that leads to salvation, to Heaven!  We closed out Friday night with fireworks over Bambi Lake.  On Saturday the Centershot teams hosted an archery tournament for kids and adults.  The sounds and sights of over 60 archers all shooting at once is really awesome.  The competition was fierce and also really fun.  We closed out the weekend by joining the church service at Roscommon Baptist Church and had a wonderful time of worship with a beautiful church body.
Ray and Krysta were able to travel to the Whitetail Properties Real Estate’s annual meeting this year.  Ray was asked to share his testimony and the Gospel with over 500 agents from all across the US. The agents were so supportive of the mission of Kicking Bear and so many have stepped up to help us “fuel the mission” and move the ministry forward with new camps and opportunities.  Thankful.
Our last camp of the month was our home camp located at Maple Grove Venues in West Salem, WI.  This one feels like a family reunion every year and this year was no different.  We love teaming up with so many areaa churches and organizations for this camp.  The ladies at Teen Challenge of Western Wisconsin helped us pack over 500 goody bags for kids, we had 6 different churches step up with volunteers, our friends from Child Evangelism Fellowship brought out their Good News trailer, the Parcher family supplied a cotton candy machine and good friends Emma Ann and Sumner Smith led worship.  All of this under the leadership of Chad and Tammy Dutton who champion this camp.  The grounds at MGV is perfect for camp and the weather this year was amazing.  Families had fun with all the activities including our giant slip and slide and getting to cast fishing poles off the boat, slinging arrows at the bowfishing station, a tough course like no other and more!  The highlight of this camp is the huge bonfire we give the Gospel message in front of and baptisms to end camp.  Really thankful and blessed.

God Will Equip You

By Pastor Kevin

Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep,  equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.–Hebrews 13:20-21

Two years ago I was blessed to step into serving full time with Kicking Bear!  It has been an amazing ride and I am very thankful.  One thing hit me hard this past month though and that is just how unqualified I was for parts of this assignment back then.  Let me explain.

My first task with Kicking Bear back in 2022 was to plan that fall’s youth hunt.  Ok. Well, I had never actually been on a hunt before, never…haha funny assignment God.  To be honest it was a little overwhelming and I felt the pressure through the process to not screw it up because it was such a cool opportunity for these kiddos.  But, by His grace and some amazing support from fellow guides I was able to plan that hunt!

And on that hunt, I had my first sit in the blind for whitetail deer with Tyler and Kaylie Bass.  They were the veterans, I was the rookie.  Sure enough Kaylie got a deer on our last sit Sunday morning.  Part of my initiation into this hunting stuff was that I had agreed over the weekend to gut the deer.  I kept telling everyone that I was probably going to either get sick or cry, so the cell cams were out.  Again by the grace of God I was able to keep it all together as brother Chad guided me through the process of field dressing that deer.  Time and time again I hear veteran volunteers with Kicking Bear talk about how they agreed to serve thinking it was all “for the kids” but once the work was being done they realized God was using that time “for them” as well.  This was happening for me too!

One more cool thing about 2022 was teaching mentees Jeffrey, Raelyn and David how to shoot crossbows so we could catch late season archery in Minnesota.  Brother Ray helped me train the kids with our Mission Sub 1 Crossbows and then we were able to get out for a winter sit.  We couldn’t quite get the deer in on that one, but again I was learning so much about the sport of hunting, it was really amazing.  Over the last two years I’ve been blessed to learn about deer, turkey and bear hunting from some of the best around!

Fast forward to last month and everything sort of came to a pinnacle moment about how God will equip those he calls.  My buddy Reese and I were out on a sit with the crossbow.  God blessed Reese with a nice doe that night and he made a perfect shot on her.  Right after some high fives and congratulations it all hit me.  I had been out on our group hunts as a guide, but this was the first time none of the other veteran’s were in reach or in the area. Was just me and Reese that night. I’d also never been out on an archery hunt that was successful.  I’d never tracked a deer solo or field dressed one without someone to mentor me through it.  As we packed up and went to look for the bolt it hit me hard, I got nervous.  But, you know what, I had learned it and so had Reese.  All the time spent with the Kicking Bear crew and all the wisdom passed on had all been part of the plan.  Reese and I had an absolute blast that night!  We tracked his deer, dressed and dragged her out and I don’t think we stopped smiling the whole time. For both of us, it was a great time to give thanks to God.  Thankful for all the amazing people who had taught us along the way and all the experiences we had in His creation.  Also thankful that night to step into putting all we had learned into practice together, making new memories.

I still have a lot to learn about hunting and if my prayers are answered God will keep providing opportunities to learn more, because I am hooked on getting kids out to hunt. It is not just about the harvest on these hunts, the time together with these kiddos is so unique in our world today.  The peace, the quiet, watching creation wake up or the sun setting, conversations about life, prayers together.  God knows about this special time and that is why He created Kicking Bear and the things we do.

God will equip those he calls. I just want to pass this along because I think sometimes we check our qualifications before stepping into Kingdom work before we check His, and that isn’t how God’s Kingdom works.  He is good and all His promises are yes and amen!  He will equip those He calls, every time.  Now let’s get some more kiddos out hunting!!!

By Michael L. Ritchie, DC

July 31st, 2019

“We are going to have a tug of war!” belts out Ray Howell, founding servant of Kicking Bear Foundation, “Boys against the girls!” This was a special year at Roscommon’s Centershot/Kicking Bear camp, because Howell was bringing his joyful exuberance to Bambi Lake Camp in Roscommon, MI, and Aaron Scheer was bringing his Genesis “Wordless Bow” to share its special story with the camp’s participants. This would be the fifth year that Roscommon Baptist had sponsored the event supported by the two organizations. “The camp has become much more fun since Kicking Bear Camps have joined us,” says Michael Ritchie, the event’s organizer and board member of Centershot Ministries. “Ray has been commissioned by God to be a big brother to all these kids and they just love being with him.”

The two-day camp included: 3-D archery using Genesis and Mission bows, archery tag, tomahawk throwing, crossbow shooting, swimming, Tug of war, minnows and sharks, relay races of all kinds, a marshmallow fight with 50 bags of marshmallows, and culminated in Aaron sharing the gospel message by using the Genesis “Wordless bow.” Fireworks ended the busy day with lights out at 11 pm. Saturday started off early with breakfast and a NASP/Centershot outdoor tournament. Lunch and awards followed the tourney and a baptism was planned for those who were saved through the ministry of the Word.

“We are seeing a clear pattern around the country: revival is happening in churches, communities and families through the sport of archery. Kicking Bear draws families in; the vehicle is the Genesis bow, and Centershot Ministries encourages families into discipleship at the local church level,” says Centershot Ministries’ Director, Aaron Scheer. Howell agrees. “Like Moses delivered the people of Israel with a shepherd’s staff, God is doing the same thing with a bow and arrows.”

The tug of war began between the boys and the girls with the boys narrowly beating the girls in 2 straight matches. “You know, we had one of our ropes let loose one time, there were so many kids pulling in opposite directions,” Howell told Ritchie. “Now we have a 2-5/8” ropes 100 foot long just to make sure it never happens again.” The world is pulling families apart these days, and it is up to God’s church to bring them together. The three-fold cord the Holy Spirit used this weekend was Kicking Bear Camps, the Genesis Bow and a Centershot Church that has made Christ the target of their lives. The commitment cards after the evening message showed that 12 young people gave their hearts to Jesus and 11 rededicated their lives to Him. Five young people and a grandmother committed to being baptized.

“One woman who brought her daughter and grandson to the camp told me that Eli (her grandson) went home and told his mom he got saved and baptized. He had the biggest smile on his face,” said Ritchie. Ritchie had the privilege of baptizing Grandma and grandson the next day at Roscommon Baptist Church’s morning service. “Jo-Jo, her daughter, also wants to be baptized in two weeks so that her friend can be there.”

Kicking Bear’s motto is “Put a bow in a kid’s hand and lead their family to the Lord – one-on-one.”

A mentor, a bow, a kid and the Lord is a cord not easily broken!

The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 4:12,

Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

Back in January we shared the 153 Vision with our leadership team.  The 153 Vision for Kicking Bear includes training up more disciples all across the nation so that the ministry can expand into new areas and have even more impact reaching kiddos and families for Jesus.  We developed a training program and kicked off everything at the Melbourne, FL camp back in February.  The idea was to equip Champions with all the knowledge and workings of a Kicking Bear Camp or Event and then get those Champions plugged into camps and events so they could apply that training.  We know every camp will be unique, but the core structure of an evangelism camp for Kicking Bear is usually similar no matter where we are.

We kicked off the month of July by hosting a Champion training right at Ray’s house up in Minnesota.  We had 14 folks step up for training that day and man was that a blessing!  We covered all classroom learning and then set up a mini camp for our families and friends to come out so that Champions could apply what they learned.  Many of these Champions then jumped right into local events in July to gain even more experience!

Another blessing came when we got to Roscommon, MI in the middle of July.  We were headed up for their camp at Bambi Lake and suggested to our good friend Michael Ritchie that we would be happy to do a Champion training up there if anyone would be interested.  Michael quickly spread the word and Pastor Erikson Aldridge graciously opened up the church doors for us to have a spot for training.  How awesome that even with short notice we had another 9 folks give a “yes” and complete the training the very next day. We were then able to take all nine Champions to camp that afternoon and put the training in action!

So far this year we have trained 30 Champions!!  These folks live in Florida, Texas, Minnesota, Kansas, Michigan and Wisconsin.  We even had one Champion, Dennis Pawlowski with Trinity Sportsman Ministries in Florida, come up to visit last week to attend our Rochester, MN adventure day at Coyote Creek. It has been really cool seeing God’s vision for the ministry come to life!!  The goal is to eventually have 72 trained Champions ready to go out and live out the Great Commission making disciples all over the country!  If you would be interested in hosting or attending a Champion training camp please reach out to Kevin– kevin.bonnar@kickingbear.org

We kicked off October in Wisconsin by taking 24 youth, 19 adult guides and 2 junior guides out whitetail deer hunting! This year we had nine kiddos harvest a deer, including four young ladies.  For eight of those young hunters it was their first deer ever!

We are so thankful for Melanie and Dennis Simon at Living Waters Events, Retreats and Cabin Getaway in Hixton, WI and Rick Teska for hosting our crew this year.  Also, a huge thanks to LTM Farms, Duane Dutton Family, Teska Family and a few neighbors for providing awesome spots for us to set out 20 blinds for kiddos to sit.  Larry Guthrie gave an awesome gospel message and Mike Rambo led worship for us up in the barn on Saturday, we had a blast sharing hunting stories and doing church together on Sunday before breaking camp.  Want to thank all the guides who step up every year to help kiddos chase dreams, and to our two junior guides who grew up in Kicking Bear and are now paying it forward by helping out with the next generation.  We also want to thank you!  Hunts like these are all made possible for kiddos who would not normally be able to have experiences like these because of your generous support of the ministry.  Thankful!

Kicking Bear guide Dan also took his mentee Zack out with the Viola Sportsman’s Club Learn to Hunt program here in Southwest WI.  They got Zack’s first deer right on opening morning!  Many of our young hunters will be out with mentors well into the holiday season, keep them in your prayers please!

Mentorship Dinner

By Kevin Bonnar

We gathered at Olivet Church in La Crosse, WI last month to celebrate our mentorship program and also to recruit new mentors and mentees. We started out the night with Ray sharing the heart of Kicking Bear mentoring and the history of how God has changed lives for the past 25 years by matching up interested kiddos with a Godly man or woman willing to take these kids on amazing outdoor adventures. Then we shared this video with KB moms sharing the impact that mentoring has had in their family’s lives: Kicking Bear Moms. Was really cool to hear of the impact! Next, we walked through our highlights of last year including our turkey, bear, squirrel and deer hunts, along with kayaking, fishing, and many more outdoor memories made by mentors and mentees. To close out the night we honored our current mentors and were very thankful to be able to give them a gift of thanks for all they do to move the mission of Kicking Bear forward and to help kids chase dreams and know that God has a purpose for their life and that purpose is for good!

If you are interested in our mentoring program please reach out to Pastor Kevin-kevin.bonnar@kickingbear.org. Also, we have created a new monthly mentor doc that we are sharing with our team, it is uploaded to the website each month and maybe you will find it useful too, check it out here: Making Tracks.

We would like to thank Silver Stag Knives and Advertising Concepts for helping us create gifts of thanks and appreciation for our mentors!

Community Impact

Last month 400+ men attended a wild game dinner in Bark River, Michigan. Ray was blessed to be their keynote speaker. Dean Hulce from God’s Great Outdoors and the leaders from Bark River Bible Church host this annual event, where they invite unchurched men in for an evening of entertainment, amazing spread of wild game dishes, hunting gifts and an invitation to accept God’s free gift of eternal life.  It was incredible! Ray’s favorite dish was the bighorn sheep meatloaf!

We witnessed God move in an incredible way with this event. God is amazing!

Ice Fishing Outing/Mathy Boys and Girls Club

You could not have asked for a more beautiful day on Lake Onalaska for the Kicking Bear mentorship crew to hit the ice! While the fish were slow to cooperate we had fun sledding behind brother Dave’s UTV, sharing some delicious soup and we even got a visit from the local news station as they were out covering the state ice fishing tournament. There was one big pike pulled out that our buddy Xavier took home and fried up for dinner, so we did get some action from the fish. Overall, it was a great day and a great reminder to make time and find purpose in gathering together in God’s great outdoors!

We were also blessed with an opportunity to serve our friends at the Mathy Boys and Girls Club in La Crosse for their February Family Night. We set up our archery stations and some arts and crafts for families. It was so much fun and really exciting that for many of the kiddos that night it was their first time shooting archery, we love that! Thankful for our partnership with such a great organization and thankful for the opportunity to share the Gospel through our service and smiles! Check out more pics from the night here!

Banquet Season 2025!

Big thank you to our Kansas Kicking Bear crew for their very successful Wild Game Tasting in February! Thank you to First Christian Church of Medicine Lodge, KS for hosting, all the amazing volunteers and sponsors and the community of great folks in Kansas that do so much to carry forth the mission of Kicking Bear with such big hearts and smiles! The body of believers in Medicine Lodge and the way they support and work with one another is a beautiful way to see the churches work together to have a positive impact on their community. Thank you for showing the way and God Bless!

Kansas Veteran’s Turkey Hunt 2023

By Ray Howell

Matt Lee – U.S. Air Force

“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

John 15:13

The annual Veterans KB turkey hunt in Kansas has always been an absolute blast.

Throughout the years I’ve had the opportunity to meet many veterans and guide them in their turkey hunts. Just before the Kicking Bear events start, is the time-proven best time to have the veterans out to hunt. In Kansas, we partner with Scott Anderson, who is a longtime friend of Kicking Bear and founder of Patriots of Praise. This year friends of Patriots of Praise and Kicking Bear, Kevin Murphy and Andrew Bizzell volunteered to guide hunts with veterans. Patriots of Praise friend Alex Rohr came on the hunt also. A really great crew was set up to serve the ones who have served our country. And the end result of the hunt was that all the veterans got a bird!

This year’s Veteran Hunters were:

William Thomas – US Army

Brian Hatina – US Army

Bruce Bennett – US Marine Corp

Cindy Weltha – US Air Force

Matt Lee – US Air Force

From the Patriots of Praise website

Patriots of Praise was established in 2014 and is a faith-based Kansas based 501c3 organization dedicated to serving our Country’s Active Duty Soldiers, Veterans, Disabled Veterans, and Gold Star Family members.

We understand the stresses and dynamic nature of military life and how it impacts lives, marriages, and families. We have learned that God doesn’t waste pain and by keeping our faith first we can experience true healing and overcome the things life throws at us.

We are committed to providing an environment where service members of various backgrounds can come and disengage through the outdoors. They have fun in sport, decompress, develop relationships and many begin or continue the healing process.

We honor them for their service and show our appreciation for the freedoms they provide our country.

We are proud to serve the men and women of our military – we use hunting and fishing to build relationships, but our first love and deepest commitment will always be to proclaim the healing power of Jesus Christ. It is a wonderful opportunity to sow into the lives of our warriors who suffer from physical, emotional, and spiritual scars as a result of their brave service.

Let me tell you a little about the hunt that I was blessed to guide. I met Matt Lee, an Air Force Veteran, and it just so happens he had never hunted turkeys before. Matt is the son of Tom Lee, a great friend and camp champion for Kicking Bear in Medicine Lodge, Kansas. It meant a lot to me to be able to take him out for his first turkey hunt.

We took the time to get him set up knowing where the shot placement should be on a big bird and practiced so he would be very accurate with his shotgun. Then off to the field we went to try and call in a turkey! It is extremely hot there this time of the year so the wood ticks and the bugs can just about drive you crazy sometimes. However, the thought of taking a big bird kind of puts that all to the side. Matt and I were going to go get him that bird even though it was really hot out that night. When we got out in the bling the turkeys were not gobbling and all was quiet. I didn’t know if a bird would even show up. But we kept calling and our spirits were up.

Matt and I got pretty excited when a big bird appeared out of nowhere and came in close, but it would not stop moving! So, Matt was not comfortable with the shot. Then suddenly it just turned and walked out of our sight. About a half hour later though, the bird came back through again looking for the hen who had been doing all the talking. This time the bird was not alone. The new bird was the one Matt wanted and it stood still for a second longer than it should have.

Matt made a perfect shot and pinched his first turkey!

It is so incredible to sit in the blind with a veteran and listen to the stories and remember the blessing of us having our freedom through the things that they have sacrificed for us. Congratulations to Matt, William, Brian, Bruce, and Cindy. Thank you all for your service to the country and we all look forward to doing it again!

Bruce Bennett – U.S. Marine Corp
Cindy Weltha – U.S. Air Force
Brian Hatina – U.S. Army

New Experiences – Same Old FUN!

By Ray and Karen Howell

Since last fall Darren Grefe, Sarge Symons, Austin Siewert, and other KB leadership members had been planning our KB bowfishing adventure day. We had been working together with Brandon Schultze from Genesis on our own Kicking Bear Signature bowfishing bows. The excitement was building over these bows and equipment purchased from Genesis and Mission by Mathews. We were set to go for June 20, 2020. Then we were hit with bad weather, i.e., torrential rain, and we had to postpone the event until June 27th. We all met the Wisconsin Bowfishing captains at Goose Island near La Crosse, WI. These amazing captains volunteered their time and stepped out of their everyday lives to help kids in need that they didn’t even know yet. Then Sarge opened the afternoon with a powerful prayer thanking God for our outdoor opportunities and to keep our adventure safe.

A picnic followed with tons of hot dogs, brats, and snacks all prepared by “general” Greffe. After the picnic we surprised the kids with an awards ceremony where we presented them with their trophy mounts from last year’s deer, bear, and turkey hunts. Then the boat captains came up and talked about safety. The mentors taught the kids, one on one, how to be safe and accurate with the bowfishing equipment. It was incredibly impressive how accurate these kids were.

Many of these kids have never had the opportunity to bowfish and the excitement was extremely high!

We paired up a few kids and mentors on each boat and as soon as darkness started to fall, the boats were launched. We planned on fishing from sunset to midnight. Each boat had halogen lights all the way around from the middle of the boat to the front which lit up the water like daylight. All the boats went in different directions.

As we were trolling back into the shallows, right off the bat we got stuck on a sandbar! Our Captain Paul jumped off the boat into the muddy water and physically pushed the boat free. We started working our way into shallow water along the weed patches and just like that a giant dogfish appeared and before I could even think, Elias released an arrow and made a perfect shot! The fish went ballistic with water splashing everywhere! The whole boat erupted with uncontrollable excitement! It was almost like when Aaron Rodgers throws a “hail Mary” for a touchdown and the place goes nuts. We pulled the fish into the boat and it was huge. Elias was smiling from ear to ear. As the night went on, every kid had several opportunities. There were fish being added to the barrel. On one occasion, Isaiah shot a monstrous carp and while the fish was taking out line, Jerome put a second arrow into that fish. You could not believe the hooting and hollering and excitement by all of us as that giant fish was brought into the boat.

As I was on the boat as a mentor, it hit me pretty hard that most of these kids didn’t know each other very well but you would have thought they were all best friends. Everyone of them helped each other out by moving to a different position to give another kid an advantage for more shooting opportunities.  Here we are in the middle of the night, on a boat, with a bunch of kids having the best time of their life instead of being on the streets involved with whatever the devil would lure them into.

In a few of the areas we went into, the bugs were so thick it looked like a snowstorm, but not one person was complaining. Everybody had their eyes locked on the water looking for any kind of movement.

On two separate occasions we had beavers pop up alongside the boat. I think we got stuck in the mud three times and each time Captain Paul was our hero. He was soaking wet with mud up to his waist; a big, burly man with a smile on his face.

On one occasion we hit a submerged stump that was undetectable. The boat came to a sudden stop, just like hitting a brick wall. I was amazed at how quickly everyone grabbed hold of each other, and no one flipped into the water. Midnight came around way too fast. We found ourselves heading back to the landing where we met up with the other groups and it started all over again—all kinds of stories and laughter—getting the boats out of the water—everyone chipping in to put all the equipment away—and taking pictures of the kids with their fish. God is good – always!

Thoughts from Mentor Ben Lipke:

Introducing a kid to the outdoors can change their life forever. I was fortunate enough to grow up with a Dad and a family that got me into hunting and fishing at a very early age. I know without hunting and fishing I would be a different person today. However, not every kid has a Father or someone in their life to introduce them to the outdoors.

Kicking Bear hasn’t been able to put on the normal number of camps, but that hasn’t stopped them from making impactful changes in kids’ lives throughout the nation. Instead of putting on larger camps, Kicking Bear has been more focused on helping kids one on one and in much smaller groups.

When Ray told me we were going to be taking some kids bowfishing on the Mississippi River I was like a kid on Christmas Eve; I was counting down the days for this trip. I would be mentoring kids and helping them enjoy the great riches God’s creation offers. While we were teaching the kids the setup of the bowfishing reels some of the kids noticed that there were a bunch of bullfrogs by the bank.

After confirming that it was legal to shoot frogs, I pulled out my blowgun and approached the bank. One of the kids was practicing with the bowfishing rig and flung an arrow at the frog. He missed and the frog jumped to a nearby rock, I took a deep breath lined up the end of the barrel with the frog and blew. The bamboo dart was like a falcon diving for its prey — thud the dart struck. The frog jumped to the edge of the water and expired. The few kids who witnessed what had just transpired went ballistic. They were yelling and jumping up and down; I’ve never seen anyone get so excited over a bullfrog. The next thing you know a bunch of kids are at the water’s edge with the bowfishing rigs trying to shoot bullfrogs, and it was awesome! Some of the kids ended up getting frogs and you would have thought they had just won the lottery. I showed them how to filet a frog; we put them on the grill and enjoyed the tasty frog legs!

To be able to witness the smiles and glow on these kids’ faces was amazing. I knew even if we didn’t get any fish that night the kids were still going to have fun. A lot of these kids had never been bowfishing before, so to be able to introduce them to it was super cool.

Once we got onto the river, and the lights got turned on it was truly one of the best experiences of my life. Arrows were being flung, fish were being skewered, kids were yelling in excitement, it was just an awesome trip to experience. To be able to get these kids off the streets, or off the couch, or distract them from their broken home life was truly a blessing. We need more people taking kids outside with everything that is going on in the world today. God’s creation can certainly become the calm in the storm.

I would like to see more people step up and introduce a kid to the outdoors. They have no idea how much fun they are missing! It doesn’t need to be something big or magnificent to get a kid hooked on getting into the outdoors. Something as small as a camping trip, catching a fish, or shooting a frog, can influence a kid for the rest of his life. If you enjoy the outdoors, it’s your responsibility to expose kids to the outdoors too. You never know, it might just change their life forever.

A single Mother’s viewpoint:

Upon our arrival there were warm greetings, friends gathered around, hotdogs on the grill, and boats preparing to launch as the KB team made sure everyone was acquainted and comfortable with each other. The team leaders didn’t hesitate to start right in to make sure we all had practice shooting the bows and understanding the safety rules. I got very confident with my shooting abilities along with my sons. Now my kids and I have found a new, fun activity that we can do together with archery.

It didn’t take long before sunset, and we were divided into several groups and out on the river. I had the pleasure of being with the little ones and a few mentors along with Brandon as our guide. I can’t help but smile remembering the “giggles” and “awes” of the children. Captain Brandon got the first fish which really excited the kids. Everyone was fortunate enough in our group to shoot fish. I even ended up shooting two big fish myself. I can’t say any of us cared much for the bugs, but overall it was the light in the children’s eyes and the Spirit of the Lord upon us that made the trip most memorable. That night even brought me down memory lane remembering late nights in the boat fishing with my Dad when I was a little girl. When it was time to return to the landing, we were all exhausted with a barrel full of fish, I believe in all honesty we all felt like kids that night; cause in God’s eyes we are. I’m so blessed for the experience because it’s one my kids and I will never forget; we’re looking forward for more to come!

Ice Fishing FUN!

By Brad Koehler

February 1st, 2020

Saturday, January 18th, in the midst of what might have seemed like another typical western Wisconsin snowstorm, Kicking Bear held a Family and Kids Ice Fishing Day. However, the Lord made sure that this was not just a typical day on the ice. We were truly blessed with a wonderful, action-packed day on Lake Onalaska!

The event was the result of gracious partners like Premier Catering, Great Lakes Cheese, and the hard-work of Kicking Bear volunteers and mentors! Kicking Bear events would not be possible without the help of godly men and women taking time out of their busy lives and coming together for one purpose: Serving the Kingdom. The Ice Fishing Day was no different! For many participants, Kicking Bear events provide a refuge. Who would have thought that standing on 15 inches of ice, in the middle of January, could serve as a refuge? No one at Kicking Bear can take credit for that, we are only ambassadors, but that was the reality of what our Heavenly Father had planned!

On a day that started with a beautiful sunrise and even a rainbow, kids and adults alike were set up with their choice of fishing holes, tasty hot chocolate, and an awesome heater to keep the tent warm. The giggles and joy of first-timers catching fish bounced from hole to hole as the panfish were biting early on. A few of the girls even started giving the fish a kiss before releasing them. AND we’ve got proof!

There was an ongoing joke between a mentor and a group of three boys about using a Vexilar system to spot fish was better than playing video games, who would’ve thought?

Just like our archery events, kids and parents were graciously coached and instructed from start to finish! For those who wanted to take a break from the fishing, there were sleds to ride and 4-wheeler pulled dog-sled rides. As soon as someone pulled a fish through the ice, crowds flocked to the spot and waited with excitement for the next fish. After hours of fishing, waiting, stories and laughter, it was lunch time.

Following a delicious pulled-pork lunch, we gave away many prizes. Throughout the afternoon, more fishing occurred since the boys couldn’t get enough. Soon came the time to pack up and head home to reflect on the many victories of the day!

Luke 5 9-11: For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid, from now on you will fish for people.” So, they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.

Who will you share God’s love with? Are you fishing for fish, or are you fishing for people?

One other lesson can be learned from a day on the ice. When you’re fishing, it’s not like bow-hunting or archery where you can actually see your target. Instead, you put your bait on the line, wait for a bite and set the hook! But, we don’t really know what’s below us, beneath the surface. In our day-to-day lives, while we are carrying out our walk with Christ, be conscious of what might be going on beneath the ice in someone’s life.

Matthew 7:12: Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets.
